I bought the remake on DVD. Took it back for a refund when I realised it wasn't actually True Grit, just a retread.

sometimes in April,

"When the Hutu nationalists raised arms against their Tutsi countrymen in Rwanda in April 1994, the violent uprising marked the beginning of one of the darkest times in African history which resulted in the deaths of almost 800,000 people."

haunting, scary, disgusting, horrifying, and so $$%^%%$ sad

An old favourite once again: Batteries not included. Still a good'un.

BTW, against my better judgement, I ordered the DVD from Dick Smith, which these days is just another name for Kogan. At the same time, I ordered another DVD from a little Ebay seller. Moments after ordering, I realised that I'd slipped up and given the Ebay seller my Ballarat address, so I messaged him. He got straight back - at 9PM on a Saturday night mind you - to me saying he'd fix that up, and sure enough, it turned up in my Tasmanian letter box on Wednesday.

F*#*%#ing Kogan, on the other hand - who'd had the correct address all along - took very nearly a month to deliver a single DVD. They emailed the day after my order claiming that they had shipped it ... but no delivery for nearly a month. Simply ... they lied.

Kogan are scumbags. This is the second time I have ordered from them (the first was a couple of years ago) and the second time their delivery has been ridiculously tardy.

Never again.

Been catching up with the films on my re-watch list.

Yesterday I watched The Jericho Mile. Made in 1979. It's one of director Michael Mann's early films and worth checking out. The full movie is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/Fx7hjFnzdcI

Last night I watched the 2003 film Matchstick Men. Starring Nic Cage and Sam Rockwell. Good but not great.

Finally watched Django Unchained the other day. Wow, just WOW. Brilliant movie, can't believe I put it off for so long because I thought it'd be boring and drag on.

Then watched Green Book again, if you haven't seen it - do yourself a favour.

I saw something fascinating last night – Barbet Schroeder's The Valley, an early '70s film about a group of French hippies who take a trek into the inner regions of Papua New Guinea to find enlightenment. The landscapes are pretty incredible, and it has an interesting style, but it's perhaps most famous for the fact that Pink Floyd composed the soundtrack for the film (which they later released as the album Obscured by Clouds).

Schroeder's an interesting director too, whose work I hadn't ever come across until now – originally from Switzerland, he began his career mostly as a producer (putting the money up for no less than three of my five favourite movies), then made a few films of his own about hippies (including this one) before turning to documentary (the two most famous ones are probably Koko the Talking Gorilla and General Idi Amin Dada) and ultimately directing Hollywood potboilers like Barfly, Single White Female and Reversal of Fortune in the '80s and '90s. The film site Mubi is doing a retrospective of his work at the moment, so I'll be interested to check out more of his work!

I haven't seen Green Book, but yeah, Django unchained is pretty damn good.

The Mechanic was on TV the other night so it was good to see it again. That's the original one from the 70s with Charles Bronson and Jan Michael Vincent.

Not a movie but there was a channel 9 doco on Ian Chappell a few nights back. I spotted it checking the TV guide and hit record, watched it tonight.

Puff piece but, the respect that people who worked and played with him have for that man is just brilliant.

There's a quote that goes something like "if you're any good you don't need to tell people, they'll tell you" That's Chappelli. He doesn't talk himself up, the people he lead do it for him.
