David Stratton's were phenomenal. He introduced a generation of viewers to landmarks of World Cinema that had basically been unavailable to Australian audiences. I first saw, eg, The Seventh Seal and many wonderful movies by Kurosawa and Ray on SBS introduced by David Stratton. I have, I think, dozens (and perhaps hundreds) of those, with his introductions, on VHS tape.

I'd love to have a look at them one day, P4S – sounds like a real treasure trove!

I watched Song of the South as a kid. Like David said, any racist bits washed straight over me, I didn't get the issue.

Mind you, I was already familiar with Brer Rabbit and co from Disney comics.

Over the Easter weekend I watched Chinatown (Jack Nicholson, Faye Dunaway) and Year of the Dragon (Mickey Rourke). Hadn't seen either for a long time and Chinatown is still brilliant, Year of the Dragon is dated but pretty good.

I watched the last hour of Big Trouble in Little China a few days back. Great cult movie.

You know what ole Jack Burton always says?

It's all in the reflexes Cool

The old Computer wore tennis shoes has a few iconic roles in his CV. Snake Pliskin, Jack Burton, Stuntman Mike to name just a few.

Jack Burton quotes

I read somewhere they going to do a remake, with The Rock as Jack. He could do justice to it.

BlacKkKlansman on Netflix

Great Spike Lee film based on a true story where a black police officer and a jewish police officer infiltrate the KKK.

Poignant in the Trump era given his tacit support of extreme right wingers in the US.

Looking at Netflix and Foxtel, Last cab to Darwin is on 7. Started watching and just got sucked in, very not bad. Not my usual stuff but liked it.

The Day After Tomorrow. Absolutely hilarious. A climate change disaster movie in which the north polar icecaps melts as a result of global warming, drastically altering the salinity of the Atlantic, which, in turn, causes alterations to the North Atlantic current that trigger a new Ice Age. The United States is basically destroyed and - on the advice of our Climate Science Hero - the doubting President orders northerners to shelter in place and southerners to evacuate. I fell asleep to magnificent scenes of Americans illegally crossing the Rio Grande to reach the safety of Mexico as unlawful non-citizens. I don’t know how it ends but I expect the ending is less relevant than the destructive spectacle.

Great stuff. Some of the CGI is quite well done and some of the acting is close to passable. Bilbo Baggins (Ian Holm), cast in the role of the Elderly Omniscient Scientist who is monitoring temperature fluctuations in the World’s oceans, adds some dignity to proceedings (I suppose).
