Belted Bendigo (without too many Essendon players) by what was, I think, 109 points (134 vs 25).

Goals: Peverill 4, Colbert 2, Thoolen 2, Dick, Sheahan, Keefe, Medhurst, Hogan, Blair, Bennell, #4 (not sure of the name), Frost, McCarthy, Mahoney, Pendlebury.

A training drill, in effect. Medhurst, McCarthy, Dick, Corrie, Thoolen, Keefe, Francis, Blair and Bennell all played. Pebbles did not.

A rough guide as to how they set up in the first term:

B: 4, Thoolen, Mugavin.
HB: Francis, Pendlebury, Mahoney.
C: McCarthy, Blair, Corrie.
HF: Colbert, Dick, Nicholls.
F: Bennell, Frost, ?.
R: Keefe, Medhurst, Peverill.
INTER: Hogan, Folino, Sheahan, Hunt

From start to finish, we belted them. They only managed about four goals, and went for long periods of time struggling to pass half forward.

Thanks for that. I managed to see the last quarter after work and had no idea of the scores.

The VFL team is going alright this year so far, hopefully we'll see a few more wins when the season comes around.

Of the players:
Thoolen - Attacked the ball/contest a lot better than he did 12-months ago, or even 6-months ago. Played mainly at FB/CHB, rucked very occasionally, and managed to push forward twice. Had a bit more of a presence out there.

Mugavin - Didn't do too much, ball didn't come down back too often and spent a lot of the game on the pine.

Francis - Really rate this guy. Hard as nails, attacks the contest, doesn't mind copping a hit or dishing one out, and tackles very hard. Perfect player for halfback (I'll say it, Hodge like in presence age and size taken into account, though obviously not the skills/ball winning ability yet), and could easily ruck-rove. Sense he is a bit of a leader, too. Mature body for his age (19), too.

Pendlebury - More of the same from last year, is easily worth a look as a potential mature-aged rookie. Wore the number 49.

Brett Mahoney - Floated in and out of the game, looked ok on the wing and by hand in traffic. Went forward for one goal. From Mansfield/Murray Bushrangers, a medium-sized midfielder/forward.

McCarthy – Dare I say it, a class above. Perhaps not quite, but his appetite for a contest is amazing, continuously tries to crash multiple tackler’s at once, and absorbs plenty of hits. Keeps his feet, too, and disposal/ability to find space is fine. Will be pushing for round one, definitely. Played high half forward in the second half and did well (where I assume he’ll continue his beginning to his league career).

Blair – Lots to like. Much better than the Coburg match. Can stick the tackles on players who are a lot taller/bigger. Kept his feet a bit more this week (not easy for a youngster, particularly one who is smaller than most), and his kicking is fine, as is the depth of it. Moves well in traffic (doesn’t panic).

Corrie – Flashed in and out of the match, and was more in than out. Tried to run the lines from the wing and generally succeeded. Shares the ball a lot by hand, and did a bit of sweeping/mopping up at halfback at one point. Kicking was occasionally askew, but certainly brings others into the game, and set up Hogan’s goal in the second quarter after breaking a series of tackles.

Colbert – Played the entire match as a half forward and did very well. Brings others into the game, led well, and has really good game sense. Kicked two, but could easily have had more had it not been for passing off. Usually found space on the lead, too.

Dick – Was everywhere in the first quarter and gradually faded after that. Still obviously reacclimatising to the pace of the game, but was quite good on the wing and in attack. Was good overhead, too, and brought others into the game. Could be getting a few senior matches this year if he holds this line of gradual improvement.

Nicholls – Pinballed his way through the game, be it as rover or at half forward. Tackled strongly and aggressively, and got to the base of the packs.

Bennell – A real spark early in the game, and faded out after that, but certainly doesn’t mind getting involved. Used his body well, one-on-one, in the air and on the ground, which was a bit of a surprise given his lack of height. It was, upon reflection, more about reading the kick rather than out bustling his opponent. Has a lot going for him.

Frost – Got better as the game wore on as a leading full forward. Didn’t spill anything, his kicking was solid, and was often too fast for his opponents. Could easily have kicked 3-4.

Keefe – Well, things are only getting better and better. Seems to add new strings to his bow each week. Did one or two really classy, smooth things below his knees (a one-handed gather, if I recall correctly), floated into attack for a goal, and showed plenty of composure. His field kicking (and for goal, too) is, all things considered, very good. Very agile, too. Would not be surprised to hear more about his prospects as the year wears on.

Medhurst – Did all he had to, and looked a class above. Some Bendigo/Essendon fans were heckling him, but he rose way above it, and brought teammates into the game by hand a la 2008. Just needs more game time, but he’ll be right for round one.

Peverill – Started in the middle, but then pushed forward for the final three quarters, where he snagged four goals, and shared the ball around. An excellent pick up, and will improve our side tenfold. Fitness superb.

Hogan – Began on the pine but then went forward, where he did well to lock the ball inside fifty. Often found himself isolated one-on-one, and went ok, and isn’t out of the contest if he spills the mark (played one match vs Box Hill last season).

Singh – Wasn’t on too much in the first half, and was quietish in the second half at half forward.

Sheahan – A real goer, and an excellent pick up. Really, really promising. Ball winner, good user of it, and not short of run and pace. Could be one to watch.

I think our VFL team will do well this season. Great to read the report on Medhurst, Dick and McCarthy all doing well.

Also encouraging to read about Jarryd Blair. That's another draft pick showing some early form.

What was NOT said about Dawes worries me though. He has to pull his finger out this year. He showed enough late last year to indicate he can play AFL footy, but he must be low on confidence at the moment.

no player on the senior list could play without special permission from the AFL, only Rocca, Medhurst, McCarthy, Dick and Corrie where nominated. Rookies like Bennel, Keefe, etc could play, but not senior guys.
