Post subject: "We want to walk out" - Tasmanian Miners | |
|
Tasmanian Miners have announced they wish to walk out themselves from the mine when they are rescued. The digging started last night and was digging all through the night, at the earliest the miners will be able to walk out of the the Beaconsfield mine tomorrow sometime.
But it could be later maybe even Saturday before they are out of the mine. _________________ Ðavâgé

This is a question I've been thinking about recently.
Why so much fuss over two people? At least that many people probably die in car accidents every day. Or are right now on life support or something. Maybe just goes to show the power of the media in beating up a story. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Why would people not fuss over two guys down a mine trapped with young families? They can still die down there, the mine can collapse more crushing them, one of the then 3 miners is dead, Scott Lamb, and the other two are surviving.
And it's been cold in Beaconsfield, so that's another thing working against the miners. _________________ Ðavâgé

Don't get me wrong... I think it is a tragedy that there are people down there that could die because of a terrible accident. Of course it's bad. BUT I also think it's bad when a couple of people lose their lives in a car accident, or die of AIDS in Africa. Yet these are not front-page stories. No, because the media doesn't care about these people. Actually the media doesn't care about anybody. They've found a story, which they know will get people on the edge of their seat, hoping the miners are saved. It obviously sells.
By the way I'm not the only one who thinks this, some of my friends have said the same thing. Maybe hold onto your righteous indignation for a few seconds and think for a bit. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Certainly the media were quick to jump on this story. The 2 major morning TV shows put their head on air personalities on a prop driven bi-plane (doubt if you could land a jet in Tassie) and had them beaming back to the mainland on Monday. When the news came that it would take until the weekend to even attempt a final break through, these personalities were back in comfortable Sydney by Wednesday!
Your point about car deaths and life support is well put. But of course in both those scenarios there is no HOPE.
Hope is what drives this story. Plus the chance of a complete tragedy if a secondary cave-in occurs.
We, the public, will of course be glued to the TV if this comes to pass. |

no hope for people on life support, thats pretty cold eunos.
I understand what your on about dave. same with the Schapelle Corby, and Nguyen Tuong Van. Many other things must surely have been equally important at the time, but the media attention is directed towards it.
We have to remember that just because something isn't front page news, and all over the TV 24/7 that it isn't important, nor are people still not helping the people involved as much as possible. _________________ "The problem with jogging is that the ice falls out of your glass"
