Nine 'secures' broadcast rights

THE AFL is understood to have accepted Channel 9's bid for the new broadcast rights deal.

But under the first-and-last rights clause, the bid by Channels 7 and 10 will have 14 days to match Nine's offer.

The league has called a media conference this afternoon at AFL House in Melbourne with chairman Ron Evans and chief executive Andrew Demetriou.

Currents rights holder Nine, in conjunction with Foxtel, has been bidding for the new deal against a joint Seven and Ten consortium.

The AFL had been resigned to continuing negotiations into the new year, but it is understood its executive held an emergency meeting yesterday afternoon and another this morning.

The new deal will start in 2007 and will run for either five or six years.

It is likely to be worth more than $700 million.

yes, it's likely to be about $190 mill a year........ 7 and 10 can't match that.....

was listening to them discuss this on SEN this morning. Channel 9 have devalued their stake in the telecast of the Commonwealth Games down to $50Mill because they couldn't get the advertising at the $60mill value.

They were suggesting that 9 would have similar problems in getting advertising under this deal.

Well thats 1 live game on a Sundie and the rest on Foxtel. Looks like an awful lot of people won't see a game now.

Well thats all 9 did this year. Friday night delayed, Sunday 1 Live and 1 part replay.

And remember this, channel 9 and affiliates do not beam into larges parts of regions.

Unless 9 have done a huge turnabout on showing bumsniffers, then this deal reeeeeeks.

What a load of SHIT. Unless Ch 9 want to get rid of NRL. We in the Northern States will suffer badly. So all we will get is Friday night Footy at 1 am. Are they even going to shaow Saturday games??? And what about Saturday night?? If so probably at 1 am as well. And Sunday we get the 1.15 pm game.

I would pay for foxfooty if I didn't have to also pay for all of the other crap on pay TV.

Yeah $700 mill for AFL; Supporters $0.00 worth.
