Post subject: Info about Luke!Reply with quote

If anyone has any links or articles on Luke we'd love to see them so we can get to know our sponsored player a bit better.

Luke Shackleton

Guernsey No: 31
Height: 179cm
Weight: 89kg
Date of Birth: 17 Nov 1984
Recruited from: Burnie Dockers / Tas U18

A hard-at-it on-baller who was a ball magnet for the Tassie Mariners in the TAC Cup, winning All-Australian honours at under-18 level and the Morrish Medal as the best and fairest player in the TAC Cup. Made his senior debut in 2002 for the Tasmania Devils in the VFL. Can also jump and take a strong mark. Carrying 90-plus kilograms, he will need to work hard on his fitness to make inroads.

Luke carries heavy burden

Collingwood recruit Luke Shackleton is determined to make his mark after he was scrutinised in the lead-up to the National AFL Draft for carrying too much weight.

Despite the query over his weight, Collingwood believed Shackleton had plenty to offer an AFL club, claiming the talented youngster at No. 29 in November’s draft.

The explosive, hard-at-the-ball midfielder has already dropped several kilograms since joining the Magpies.

“I lost about two or three kilos since I’ve been at Collingwood,” Shackleton said.

“That was always the big question above my head, but Collingwood saw something that other clubs may not have and they’re going to help me out in every way.

“It’s all I was working on up until Christmas, just getting my skinfolds down.”

Shackleton, who has been rated by many as a “natural footballer”, made his debut with the Tasmania Devils in the VFL in 2002. This year he won the Morrish Medal, the Brownlow Medal equivalent in the TAC Cup, and was the only Tasmanian to gain All-Australian status in the under-18 championships.

He was delighted to join the Magpies as most of his family follows the black and white.

“I’ve got heaps of family over here anyway, so it’s all worked out well,” Shackleton said.

Shackleton, who has an outstanding leap for his size, said he was looking forward to 2003.

“The thing that I’m looking forward to is to get some practice matches under my belt and I’m looking forward to the pre-season games,” he said.

“I’m still deciding (my goals), because they don’t normally play their first-year players (in the seniors).

“They said I’d play a midfield role and up forward as a small forward.”

Info from when he was first drafted.

29 Luke Shackleton Tassie Mariners, 18, 177cm, 80kg

Inside player from Burnie Dockers who made his debut this year for Tasmania Devils in VFL. Great possession-winner with excellent spring. Won All-Australian honours in AFL U18s in 2002.

By looking at that, it seems he has bulked up a bit.

Luke Shackleton

Date of Birth: 17/11/84
Height: 179
Weight: 89
From: Burnie Dockers (TAS) / Tasmania U18
Debut:
Position: Midfielder

Quote:
Bullocking on-baller who excelled for Tasmania in the TAC Cup, but has yet to make the breakthrough into the senior side.

A strong mark for his size, Shackleton is unlikely to be muscled off the ball, but will need to improve his endurance to take the next step.
