Ireland's star forward may consider a switch to the AFL

Quote: | Irish international rules star Steven McDonnell will consider a switch to Australian football after being a stand-out performer in Ireland's recent series loss to Australia.
McDonnell was yesterday named by Irish captain Graham Canty as the player in the touring squad most likely to pursue an AFL career.
"Steve McDonnell might think about it," he said.
"He did very well in the series, he did a lot of scoring and he was very good, he's got speed and skills."
At 24 years of age, McDonnell has made his name in Gaelic football as a forward in the powerful County Armagh side that has reached the past two All-Ireland finals. |
According to that article, the bloke is 183 centremetres tall, and 80kgs. So I guess if he is a forward, he would have to play on the flank, because he is to small for a key position. |

It would be awfully hard for him to switch. At age 24 he can't be placed on the rookie list so he must be one of the listed players. If he can't make the switch then whoever recruited him would have taken a big gamble and lost. |

It would be better off for him to spend a year playing VFL, get a feel for the game, before being drafted. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

Maybe not thins particular player but I think looking at some of the Irish younger talent must be done. Kennelly has been a revelation for the Swans and will be a great player in the future. If we could unearth a similar talent that would be sensational. |

2 years of development and he will be an AFL footballer, whether he plays 200 games is another thing. Kennelly looks great, lest see how he goes in 2004 now that every other club knows about him. |

Kenneally also took quite a long time in development. Certainly Jim Stynes and Sean Wight made it in this game but it still is a different game to what they've been brought up on with far more physical contact.
Certainly, I would not dissuade clubs from keeping interest in gaelic footballers or gaelic players trying their hand but you would need to look at their ages and physiques. _________________ he's an animal, what can u expect!!! |
