No, we wouldn't want to upset the farmers and the cows now would we?

Vics out to attack Bulls
Mu Michael Horan
October 31, 2003

VICTORIA will look for more top-order aggression and a repeat of the upset it caused late last season when it meets Queensland in a day-night ING Cup clash at the 'Gabba this afternoon.

Soundly beaten six days ago by New South Wales at Bowral, the Bushrangers, who will go into this clash as rank underdogs, have been urged by coach David Hookes to get after the Bulls attack.

"We're trying to get our players to up their natural game and play a lot more aggressively from the beginning of their innings. (Against NSW) our top order got bogged down quite a lot in the first 10 overs or so," Hookes said.

"Apart from Brad Hodge obviously, I think the rest of the players at the top of the order really didn't play the aggressive approach that we've been practising and talking about.

"We've just got to keep educating the players to back themselves and be committed to what we are trying to do."

Hodge blasted 101 off 115 balls to put some flesh on his side's 50-over total of 9-244, but the small boundaries at Bowral made the total look better than it was, with NSW running down the score with three overs to spare.

Hookes is looking for more input from seasoned opener Matthew Elliott and former West Australian David Hussey to support the likes of Hodge and Nick Jewell.

Skipper Cameron White, who became the youngest man to lead Victoria when he stepped out at Bowral, said last week's effort was "pretty good" and the side was ready to go one better today.

"Last week we stayed in the game until pretty much the end of the match, which was a good thing," White, 20, said.

"Obviously we needed a couple of early wickets after finishing 20 or 30 runs short on the board, but we didn't get them. But we bowled well and fielded well, right up until the end."

White emerged from a team meeting yesterday afternoon quietly confident the Bushrangers could beat Queensland.

"We talked about the way we'll play and the intent we'll go out with. Hopefully in this game we can show that and do well," White said.

Victoria has lost wicketkeeper and four-day captain Darren Berry because of a broken finger, but has regained aggressive paceman Mick Lewis, who claimed three of Queensland's top four batsmen in the corresponding match at the Gabba last season.

Queensland has named the 12 that accounted for Tasmania at the 'Gabba in its opening ING Cup match last week.

With the Bulls missing 6 of their regulars - Hayden, Maher, Bichel, Kasper, Hauritz and Noffke - you'd reckon the Bushies would have to win.

But it is at the Vic's graveyard - The Gabba.

Farrell a chance for ING Cup debut

Chris Herde

Rookie Steve Farrell could make his Queensland debut tomorrow when the Bulls play Victoria in the ING Cup at the Gabba.

Farrell was 12th man in the Bulls four-wicket win against Tasmania last Saturday but with allrounder Lee Carseldine recovering from a back injury the 23-year-old could be called upon.

If Carseldine can bowl the Bulls may drop a bowler and give the ten overs to the allrounder, leaving the hard hitting Farrell batting at No.6.

But Bulls coach Terry Oliver played a straight bat over Farrell's elevation into the XI.

"It's too early to call ... but we named the 12 for a reason and that's to have our options open at the start of play," he said today.

"I suppose if the pitch looks like it might have a bit in it and we might need to play an extra batsman there's every chance he'll play but if we need the bowlers then maybe not."

Oliver said Carseldine's bowling was "going along steadily" after his recovery from a back injury which restricted him to only batting late last year.

But he doubted if Carseldine was ready to bowl a full ten overs.

"We just have to be careful with Lee that we don't do any further damage to his back and lose him altogether from the side," Oliver said.

The Bushrangers have made three changes to last week's one-day squad with veteran wicketkeeper Darren Berry out after suffering a broken finger in a practice match against South Australia during the week.

Replacing Berry will be Peter Roach, who in his last first class appearance in February hit his maiden century.

Batsman Nick Jewell and allrounder Tim Welsford were dropped from the 12-man squad for pacemen Michael Lewis and Allan Wise.

A crowd of more than 10,000 is expected at the Gabba for the day/night game which is promoted as Volunteers' Day.

ING Cup squads: Queensland Bulls: Martin Love (c), Stuart Law, Daniel Payne, Clinton Perren, Lee Carseldine, James Hopes, Wade Seccombe, Nathan Hauritz, Mitchell Johnson, Joe Dawes, Shane Jurgensen, Steve Farrell.

Victorian Bushrangers: Cameron White (C), Peter Roach, Matthew Elliott, Shane Harwood, Brad Hodge, David Hussey, Mathew Inness, Brendan Joseland, Michael Lewis, Andrew McDonald, Jonathan Moss, Allan Wise.

Martin Love won the toss and The Bulls will bat.

Even with so many players out, they still look strong with names like Love, Law, Perren, Carseldine, Seccombe, Dawes, Hopes, Hauritz and Payne.

Of course, this is a healthy by-product of having rep players. The second stringers develop quicker.

At the 10 over point, Q'land are 0/44 with Law on 34 from 30 balls.

Good start for them.

Moss (3/22 from 7) has brought The Bushies right back into the frame.

Cam White (1/19 from 5) chipped in as well to have The Bulls at 4/109 after 27 overs.

Love is 21 n.o. and Law batted well for 55 from 56 balls.

Allan wise, a 24 y.o. left arm quick, gets his first wicket for Victoria.

A pretty good one at that. Bulls skipper Martin Love for 39. 5/137 in the 32nd. over.

The Bushies are chasing 236 for victory.

Wade Seccombe scored a good 50 from 59 and was well supported by Nathan Hauritz, 39 from 33.

Moss took 3/52 and Wise, 2/34, both from 10 overs.

I live about 3 hours drive south of the Gabba and it's been raining here for about half an hour and heading north, so it could well be a rain affected result.

Rain has delayed the start of Victoria's Innings.
