McGrath out, call-up for Williams
October 5, 2003

SENIOR Australian pace bowler Glenn McGrath was today ruled out of the first cricket Test against Zimbabwe in Perth starting on Thursday.

West Australian paceman Brad Williams will come into the 12-man squad and could make his Test debut in front of his home crowd after it was decided not to take any risks with McGrath who underwent ankle surgery in August.

A team spokesman said McGrath would fly home to Sydney immediately.

McGrath bowled in the nets yesterday but pulled up sore and said then he was not happy with his progress.

He said then he would not play unless he was close to 100 per cent fit. McGrath also indicated he was prepared to sacrifice the first half of the domestic summer to ensure his fitness for a gruelling schedule over the next 18 months.

"For a fast bowler, when you've got ankle problems with your front foot, it can be a major problem," McGrath said.

Once again, an opposition captain wins the toss in the first Test and sends the best batting team in to bat.

Yes, it is Perth but what message does it send to your top order batsmen ??

In the 81st. over, Matt Hayden goes to 150 as Australia move on to 3/323. Steve Waugh is 45 n.o. Their partnership is 108.

Hayden is creaming this attack. He just took Heath Streak for 4,4,6 in the previous over and 13 in 4 balls from his next as he moves on to 163. Partnership is 137. 3/336 after being 3/203 at tea.

Earlier, Langer made 26, Ponting, 37 and Martyn, 53.

What a last session !! Hayden scored 107 and Waugh 57. Australia 169. 101 in the last over.

At stumps, Australia is 3/372.

Hayden (181 n.o.) hit 22 fours and 3 sixes. Waugh went to 53 with a 4 and celebrated with a mighty 6.

Waugh has now scored 362 in his last 4 innings and not been dismissed.

Hayden went from 100 to 150 in 32 balls !!

It's funny that it takes Hayden about 5 overs to go from 95 to 100 but then the next 5 overs he scores about 50!

Into it straight away.

Waugh begins the day with two cracking boundaries. He's 70.

The Hayden/Waugh partnership goes past 200 as Australia bring up the 400.

Hayden goes to 198 with third 4 in a row. Waugh is 78.

Bang !! 200 for Hayden. Top knock.

Waugh gone for 78. Brilliantly caught & bowled by Irvine.

Inside edge onto pad, ballooned to short forward leg and an excellent catch to the bowler, following through and diving. 4/406.
