The Stupid thing was that we got Lynch to Replace him

Thing was that Lynch was meant to play the Brown role, and Dawes was always going to be in the side but not rucking. Whatever happened at the meeting with Bucks it seemed to turn him off the idea.

I would have preferred to have kept Dawes, but what's happened has happened and hopefully he remains injury free for the Dees.

So Bucks is not a Fan of Dawes and Told him that then?

Nobody knows what was said Dave. You shouldn't just assume Bucks didn't rate him.

Then can you think of any reason why he left then?

That game on the weekend was exactly the reason I've been so scathing of him in '11 and '12. Clearly capable of playing with this mojo and at this standard but hardly ever produces the goods.

And if and when Broomy gets a break from injuries and poor health we'll be laughing all the way to the bank.
If he doesn't we did what we had to do at the time and this enabled us to eventually nab White who is more suited and needed for our style of play.

From what has been documented:
Bucks wanted a two tall forward setup, with one of the talls taking second ruck duties. This was tried with Dawes on 2012 and saw Dawes' form drop dramatically. Lynch was then recruited as a free agent to fill this role.

The likely scenario is that Buckley informed Dawes of the intended forward structure for 2013. Cloke is a lock as the pure KPF. Lynch would be taking the second spot as he had proven himself as both a competent ruck and forward.

With this structure, Dawes would likely be depth, unless an injury occurred. He was given a choice. Languish in the twos, which both he and Bucks both knew he was too good for, or look for other opportunities elsewhere. He ended up at Melbourne, and nobody could really blame him for looking for greater opportunity.

The great irony in all this is that if he had stayed he would probably have been playing senior footy with us again by the end of last season, as Bucks reverted to a 2 KPF + fwd/ruck structure last year, and Reid would still likely be at CHB.

But I digress, Bucks didn't necessarily tell Dawes he wasn't good enough, more likely told him he was too good to be stuck as depth due to our forward structures.

The question is who would you rather have, Dawes or Jesse White?
If Dawes was still on our list we would not have recruited White.
Lynch was recruited for a "gap" year.
I'd take White, has more tricks and can play in the ruck when needed.
And as mentioned, broomhead will be a beauty with a bit of luck with injury.

Not necessarily true. White was clearly a longer term replacement for Lynch, as he was earmarked for the fwd/ruck role in preseason. If Dawes was still here we would most likely still have Reid as a defender. There's every possibility that we would have both White and Dawes on our list if Dawes had stayed.

Having said that, I think we are more dangerous with Reid as a forward than Dawes, so we are better off any way you look at it really Wink

Disappointed he had to leave, but accept it was a decision that was of benefit to both parties. Assume he basically doubled his salary moving to the Dee's.

Happy to see him do well- especially after being unable to get on the field for so long.

The Lynch signing was essential. Dawes proved entirely inept at the relief ruck role. So much so that we had to go with Maxwell late in the season. It was not the club telling Dawes he wasn't wanted, it was Dawes proving he could not play the role asked of him.

He could have stayed around and been a possible selection as an extra tall forward, or as a backup. But he would not have been guaranteed games. Toss up between staying at the Pies, playing quite a bit of VFL, or going to the Dees where he'd be a leader, one of the first picked, and on far more money? Why wouldn't he leave?
