Yep. It's been all over the footy media this weekend after The Caff's magnificent shutdown of "Pretty Boy (aka Caro's pin-up) Trent Cotchin". The comments coming out of the umpiring department don't auger well for the role of tagger. Watch them try to stamp it out now that we have discovered a true tagger of superior quality.

This is known as the Collingwood Effect, i.e. when Collingwood discovers a way to beat the opposition fair and square the AFL is duty bound to find a way to change the rules to destroy such an advantage.

They are destroying this once great game the AFL. That is why Nick Maxwell will also be suspended this week for a legitimate hip and shoulder. It is also why Cotchin will NOT be suspended for a clear punch to the guts of a Pies player. They hate us! Evil or Very Mad

Bucks made a good point. Caff transgressed and Cotchin got 5 frees. Cloke gets mauled every week and rarely gets a free.clearly he thought the hysteria was misguided.

You can trace the collingwood effect all the way back to Micky gayfer.

I wish I could disagree with how it will unravel but alas i can not.

The Collingwood Effect.
That's brilliant and 100% correct.

It's a conspiracy my brethren.

Trust me, it'll be another 20 years before we win a premiership because people like Harley and all those Collingwood hating pricks in the media and the umpiring department will make damn sure of it.

I just checked the AFL website for the stats on the free kicks to Cotchin.
He got 5. But Macaffer only gave away 3. So Cotchin must have got 2 other free kicks from someone else?

I'm actually inclined to agree with Hayden Kennedy—any holding or serious impeding of opponents should be penalised. By the same token, it's a physical game and star players should accept being worn as a glove so long as they're not being unfairly impeded. It's a fine line and I'm happy for umpires to police it more rigorously, just as I'm happy for Caff to keep doing his excellent work so long as he stays within the rules.

Can anyone think of other examples of the Collingwood Effect. I know that after we won the 2010 flag the Rules Committee immediately moved to place restrictions on the interchange rotations. Chalk that up to the Collingwood Effect. Anything else?

BTW Piesnchess, did you see the Fatman was with his family on the Gold Coast last night. He's only ever been to see a game in Tassie once in his entire reign at AFL House, but he seems to catch a Suns game every third week. I'm sure he empties the pool every time he tries to dive in. Rolling Eyes

Peter Moore in the ruck. Wrestled Gary Dempsey in the Prelim Final 1979. The rules changed the next year.

no comments about Beams, Pendles and Swan getting held at every stoppage, I thought Beams had a tag on the weekend but beat it.
