Silicon Valley!

I went to Los Angles for a conference about twenty years ago (Silicon Valley was still sucking on the analogue nipple back then)
I had a week-end to kill so I went wandering done Wiltshire and stumbled on the La Brea tar-pits museum.

Sounds like a good recommendation still [ http://www.tarpits.org/ ]. Might try to combine it with a Hollywood/Santa Monica visit as it's in North LA.

Funny you mentioned it, because I was just saying to someone today I'm keen on going to a natural history museum. I definitely haven't grown out of marveling at dinosaurs! (Good museums in the UK, too, BTW).

The history of Silicon valley and the San Francisco Bay area are fascinating; it's astonishing how the whole thing connected up on the basis those early semi-conductor companies.

Are you going to "This Is The Show" with Stui again?

Hmm, Stui and I? If he doesn't kill me, we're more likely end up drunk at Crazy Horse Razz

Stanford Universitystunning campus, frighteningly elite environment. You wonder how everyone else on earth can compete. Mind-blowing, in fact; if you've got bright kids, try to get 'em there.

San Franciscovery cool.

Yep San Fran's great PTID. I went over there during the summer break in January and absolutely loved it.

Plenty of great sights and lots to do as a tourist!

Well done, sounds like a really good day, cheers

It was, a shame the game wasn't that good but I got to sit in a very good seat for free so no real complaints here. The weather managed to hold up and no rain until later.

I was so sore the next day, but I still went and took some photos at KGV.

Not quite the right content for the "happy" thread; "intriguing" might be a better word.

^In a bitter twist, we wander down to a local township called Seal Beach, which is quaint and has a really nice pier. So I type in a search to read about the area and, yes, eight people were killed in a mass shooting on the main drag right amongst the artisan-style shops back in 2011 Rolling Eyes

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Seal_Beach_shooting

On the other hand, there was a disabled elderly black man in a wheelchair seemingly stuck on the pier late (causing me angst, not knowing if he was stranded, with someone, or whatever). Anyhow, one nice young white fella asked him if he needed a hand and wheeled him back.

Such are the highs and lows of the world in which we live.

After writing the above, a couple of apartments burned down two blocks away (rumours of a meth lab, but I can't find any official confirmation of that http://www.ocregister.com/articles/fire-660839-apartment-kim.html ), while my brother-in-law's bike was stolen from his garage this morning in a nice area literally minutes after the garage door was opened up from inside!

Got to watch a local SWAT team member go over the theft report with him and investigate things, which was interesting.

And this is a very nice street, for goodness' sake!

I guess I did ask for some real American action. Be careful what you wish for!

Emirates Worlds Biggest International Airline Bans Transport of Hunting Trophies

Emirates, the worlds biggest international airline, have banned the transportation of hunting trophies on all its services effective Friday 15th May 2015.

IFAW confirmed with Emirates SkyCargo today that the ban affects the transportation of trophies of elephant, rhinoceros, lion and tiger.

It follows swiftly in the steps of South African Airways which last month banned all transportation of the same trophies.

A statement by Emirates SkyCargo said the decision to stop transporting hunting trophies was to support international governments, intergovernmental and non-governmental organisations that are managing wild populations towards sustaining the task to eliminate illegal trade and the transportation of hunting trophies worldwide and saving wildlife heritage.

Emirates SkyCargo handles the cargo needs of all Emirates services, including its passenger services. The ban prevents carriage of hunting trophies on all the airlines services. Emirates connect to 120 destinations in more than 70 countries.
