I hope you see the irony of all of the armchair experts on here opining on what trans people are like and how they should live their lives. _________________ "Every time we witness an injustice and do not act, we train our character to be passive in its presence." – Julian Assange |

No, me too. (I should really have pointed out that most of the people commenting in this thread are men, too!)

Well people who aren't gay are entitled to voice an opinion on same sex marriage, what's the difference?
The majority makes rules/law for the all, the minority don't get to make rules for themselves, let alone rules that impact others. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

So Hannah Mouncey, the transgender athlete, has been prevented from being drafted in the AFLW because "the AFL ruled her physical disparity is a significant advantage for the former national handballer."
She is however clear to play for Ainslie in their womens competition.
Quote: | The AFL said in a statement that Mouncey would have had an “unreasonable advantage” over other AFLW players.
“In this circumstance, the AFL has made a decision that the physical disparity between Hannah and other AFLW players is significant, in that it would have an effect on the AFLW competition and give rise to an unreasonable advantage.
“The subcommittee’s decision took into account the stage of maturity of the AFLW competition, its current player cohort and Hannah’s individual circumstances.
“This decision solely relates to Hannah’s nomination for the 2018 AFLW draft and participation in the 2018 AFLW competition.” |

I think it's wise that the AFL tread carefully here. However, you do feel sorry for Hannah. She, after all, has done nothing wrong.
But, not to worry.
I've sure the Human Rights Commission or some other govt. body will ensure that the AFL assumes the "correct" position on transgender athletes by next year's draft. |

I follow numerous American sites on Twitter and, surprisingly, this story is being reported there. |

A wise decision by the AFL.
Now lets just hope they don't get bullied into a backflip by the screaming of the looney brigade. _________________ Don't count the days, make the days count. |

I just find it interesting that she can be considered to big to play against supposedly the best of the best woman footballers, yet it's fine to play against the mugs in Canberra.
Yeah the pace and intensity would be less in a lower league, but so is the players skill level. I would have thought the more skilled players would be in less physical danger. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

My thought too, Stui. I’m guessing this is something of an “out of sight, out of mind” decision on the part of the league.
https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2017/oct/17/afl-cannot-play-equality-card-when-denying-transgender-footballer-hannah-mouncey
Quote: | The AFL has shown clear disrespect to Mouncey in the timing of the announcement. The AFL has been aware of her desire to be drafted since at least 23 June – when Melbourne inquired as to her availability – but waited until the last possible moment (late afternoon on the day before the draft) to make the announcement. There had been talks of an injunction to the draft if Mouncey was denied the right to be drafted, but the timing of the announcement means such a move is impossible. Compounding matters is the fact that – at this late stage – Mouncey has no possibility of appeal. |

I think the AFL said something along the lines of the issue of unfair advantages being more serious for (semi-)professional than casual competitions, i.e. it wasn't about safety. |

That's probably why they said she's able to try again in 2018. give the hormones another 12 months to do their work. _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |
