So the AFL dont want a bar of it?
In all honesty, I cant see them raising the money. And even if they did, I really dont think it'll go up at VP.
What happens to the money donated if they dont reach the target? _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

Maybe the AFL are concerned that if they get involved with the statue women's groups might kick up a fuss?
Then the AFL would find itself in the unenviable position of being caught between two causes : first peoples and women.
Wisest to leave this one alone. |

I was at that game in the outer and it was the same for us. We didn't even realise it had happened until after the game. No racist comments near us. Truly. |

8 days left to reach their target of $150,000.
They've raised $12,012 so far. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

So much history at Vic Park, especially during the depression and people want a Winmar statue, oh please, what rubbish.

I totally agree, if you're going to have a statue have one to Jock McHale or Gordon Coventry. _________________ " Ohhh Banksy and out comes the Note Book".

The Victoria Park Heritage Committee supports the campaign to build a statue to honour a significant moment in the ground's history.
If any statues are made of Collingwood players they will be erected at Olympic Park.
Those calling for a statue of Leon Davis should realise that Nicky Winmar played more games at Victoria Park than he did. In fact, of the 225 games Leon Davis played for Collingwood he never once played on Victoria Park.

Even though pledges have not yet reached 10% of the target I hear there will be significant news regarding this project in the very near future. Possibly released in conjunction with this weekend's Community Cup which have finally got to the 'home of Community Footy' after lobbying Reclink for many years.

It wasn't a significant moment in anything and I'm saddened (actually "appalled" is closer to the mark) to read that anyone interested in the history of the Club would put their support behind this. |

It was a significant moment in history.
But it doe's smack of PC to some people.
Trying to think of other significant moments in sport.
John Greening incident, Bradbury ice skating, Ali throwing his gold medal away, Man U plane crash, Ben Johnson disqualified in 1988.
Probably a lot of iconic moments out there. _________________ we don't eat our own at collingwood we just allow them to foul our nest. |

Thankfully there will be better upgrades to the ground to be announced soon for the AFLW and VFL games.
Big money behind this upgrade too, and I can't see a Winmar statue being included in this upgrade. |

From the brief research I've seen, it seems to me that:
*Collingwood supporters do not want the statue at Vic Park, but would be happy to see it at St Kildas home base or even the MCG.
*St Kilda supporters do not want it at Vic Park and would much prefer it stand somewhere they can admire it.
*The AFL don't want a part of it.
*The man himself doesn't want the statue put up at Vic Park.
I'd like to know what size the statue would be. Are we looking at something the size of Bob Rose outside of Westpac? Or the legends around the MCG? Or are we looking at something a bit smaller, like Ted Whitten outside Whitten Oval?
I hate to say it, but I do feel that it would be stolen or vandalised at Vic Park. It wont be admired like it would at another venue.
I'm not saying that to make anyone look racist, but more anti-St Kilda. Which I am. I grew up near Waverly Park hating St Kilda. 2010 was the best thing that ever happened.
I appreciate his stand against racism. Weather it was against 1 person, 1,000 people or 20,000 people. It's a truly iconic image. Perhaps we're better off erecting the statue elsewhere. The club and the AFL could be a part of it and then we could celebrate indigenous culture / players with something else at Vic Park.
I think there is a relationship that needs to be repaired between Collingwood and the indigenous culture. Celebrating Leon Davis and Andrew Krakouer has helped, but we've also had some embarrassing moments.
So is there something else we could do at Vic Park to celebrate all indigenous players whilst recognising our mistakes in the past? _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

If they'd like to speak with Monkhurst about putting it outside his house, that's fine with me. |
