An argument has erupted over Gillon McLachlan’s response to the scandal involving Dane Swan, with Collingwood great Tony Shaw leading the charge.

Shaw branded the AFL chief executive’s comments “totally inappropriate and unwarranted”.

Speaking on 3AW Mornings, McLachlan said Swan had clearly been wronged by whoever leaked the video.

However, he raised eyebrows with his next comment.

“Just don’t get yourself in that situation,” McLachlan said.

“I know that’s challenging and people do what they do, but ultimately, that’s all you can do.”

Shaw couldn’t believe what he heard.

“Totally inappropriate and unwarranted from Gil,” the premiership captain said.

“This wasn’t Swanny’s fault, at all.

“He (McLachlan) should have supported him like he would have if you reserved the roles – male and female.”

Neil Mitchell also weighed into the debate.

“What happened to Dane Swan was wrong and nobody – male or female – should have to put up with that type of intrusion but I’m a little amused by some of his mates, could they be misogynist mates, who are being outraged on his behalf,” the 3AW Mornings host said.

“I didn’t hear a lot of outrage when a young woman had her privacy brutalised by that Richmond player who photographed her topless and then circulated the photograph.”

At a guess I would say 100,000 people have broken the law and good luck charging them all and getting it through the court system. I received the clip from approx 80 people I know. The first person that told me it was Swan was a Police Officer, before the news broke. The winner here is Swan's Tattooist, he has had a massive load of exposure as there isn't really any area for Swan to have any more ink done. Normally we have a female victim and now this has turned that on it's head.

Going by Sharing and Viewing I say at least half of Victoria has seen it.

So they going to Arrest or Chase just about everyone?

After saying that Swanny has clearly had his rights violated Gil just said what everybody was thinking I reckon. Same with the Richmond medal tits chick. Just don’t put yourself in that position.

What, don’t have sex with someone if they have an iphone in the vicinity!? At least Broad’s mate consented to being photographed in the first place (not that that in any way made her responsible for the photos being shared without her consent). In contrast, by the sounds of things, Swan didn’t even know he was being filmed. It was a stupid and judgemental thing for McLachlan to say, and does indicate sexist double standards. But then, the AFL’s ‘respect for women’ policies have always carried a whiff of infantilisation.

A 20-year old NSW woman has been charged after allegedly posting the footage online without Swan's consent.

The private school brigade running the AFL nowadays are elitist toffs, who simply pretend (for their own benefit) to represent the interests of ordinary supporters.

Good to see the law applied consistently.

Err... what is the connection of this comment to the topic? Are you thinking of Gillon's completely tone-deaf comments about these matters earlier in the year?

I wonder how they caught the offending woman. I guess she did not bother to try to make herself untraceable. I also guess how hard they try to track down someone is in proportion to the perceived level of the offence, which may or may not be affected by the fame of its victim.

It was legally wrong to expose Swan on tape, but the video itself was embarrassing to him simply because he was straying on his missus at the time.
Had he been involved with his committed partner in the sex act, she wouldn't have distributed the recording nor attempted to blackmail etc. Both the girl and Swan did the wrong thing morally.
Swan's made himself vulnerable, as Gil was alluding to.

^ That’s really not Gil’s business, AP. Or ours.

^ It's amazing that someone with legal training like Gillon would be so loose-tongued.

i don't know why they call it social media when it is consistently shown to be anti-social. This girl may well find her career options limited to porn and stripping. And it is entirely her own fault.
