Watching a little of the VFL game on Saturday, is there something Rupert Betheras-like about Kyle Martin? A bit quicker, but a utility with more than an average goal sense. _________________ Buzz

He doesn't have any value, Dave. |
Well if Kicks 6 goals in the Reserves a Team would give a 2nd Rounder for him |
Doubt it. Maybe Melbourne would have when they were playing moneyball under Neeld, but no team in their right mind would trade a second rounder for a rookie. |

Also what would we look for with a second round pick ?
Hard running mid who can win his own footy, is great overhead, kicks goals and is a ball magnet capable of gathering 30+ touches at high efficiency.
Wait, hang on, is that not Martin already ?

In this instance, the 'either/or' conundrum can be neatly avoided. Martin for Lynch as an LTI, Frost the mid-year upgrade. |

Can Scharenberg play VFL while on the LTI? What if he's ready to play before the mid-season upgrade is available? We leave Frost out for a game or two?
No. The only reason to upgrade Martin is if we're going to play him. And remember his Essendon game in the VFL last year was statistically equivalent to this year's (27 disposals, 6 goals). It didn't get him too many games then, or a spot on the list. VFL form will not be the only consideration as to whether he'll be picked. _________________ Well done boys! |

The aim of the game is to have your best possible squad in time for the finals.
Therefore, we must look after the team first, individuals second.
The idea of not deserving to be dropped must disappear. Being dropped should be replaced by ... being rotated out, or being rested.
If Martin continues goal kicking form in the VFL, then he should definitely get a chance to show what he can do, and if that means rotating Blair out for a while, then so be it.
If he then can be that defensive forward, but kick more goals than Blair, then ... |

Martin's not shown Blair-like defensive effort. If he had he'd already be ahead of him, surely, as there's no question his offensive game is superior. There is clearly more the club are asking of him or he would have played more games last year and been given a spot on the list. It wasn't as if his performance on the weekend was something revelatory, he did the same last year, the club already knew he was capable of that performance. _________________ Well done boys! |

I see where you are coming from. My point about rotations is more generic, no just about Blair. |

I agree about rotations. We don't have a clear cut best 22. If we have most of our players available we should be rotating based on form, niggles, or just to give someone of about equivalent ability a run. _________________ Well done boys! |

Read MagpieBat's post again mate.
Frost will get the mid year upgrade even though he is out for Scharenberg right now. This will allow Scharenberg to come back to play. He wont be ready before mid year anyway. Then Martin can take Lynch's spot assuming he goes on the LTI list. |
