Well this has been fun hasn't it!?
I guess a couple of people agree that the cost of housing is what maybe makes the real difference. However my argument is that if I lived in NYC (for example) and earned what I earnt now, then I'd probably have to live about as far away as Las Vegas. Basically as I said before if I could only afford a $300K house, wouldn't I buy a house for $300K in Sydney or wherever? (If there's nothing going you rent). I mean you therefore live in perhaps one of the not better suburbs, or live further out and therefore increase your cost of travel. Therefore you should only get the increased cost of travel as increase in wages (this ignores the fact that if I lived in NYC I may be on a slightly higher income ).

Testing testing 1..2..3 PeterWH are you there ??
Storms cut power to 11,000 homes on Sydney's outskirts but the city was spared forecast damaging winds and hail.
The storms blew in across the Wollondilly and Wingecarribee areas south of Sydney causing isolated flash flooding, road closures and hail the size of $2 coins.
The turbulence continued over Camden, Campbelltown, Bankstown and then weakened as it continued on towards Sydney city.
Other storms developed around Kiama, Shellharbour and west of Wollongong on the South Coast, the Blue Mountains and Hawkesbury regions as well as inland areas near Wyong and Gosford on the Central Coast.
Heavy rain was reported across much of the metropolitan area with 22mm of falling over Campbelltown in 20 minutes.
Winds gusted up to 75 kph on the southern outskirts and lightning strikes caused minor disruptions for CityRail services and power supplies.
Integral Energy expected most of its customers would be back on line by nightfall. A spokesman said the outages were caused by lightning, wind damage to main lines and "tracking" - caused by a buildup of dust which turns to conductive mud when the drought breaks.
State Emergency Service (SES) spokeswoman Laura Goodin said only a handful of damage reports had been made and "it doesn't look like it's going to generate a lot of jobs for us".
The Bureau of Meteorology's severe weather forecaster James Taylor said the storm risk in most areas had dropped off by 5pm (AEDT).
"As they move into coastal areas we are expecting them to ease off as they move into seabreeze type areas," Mr Taylor said.
The Rural Fire Service has issued total fire bans for 24 hours on Tuesday over most of western NSW for the Riverina, South West Slopes, Central West Slopes and Lower Western regions.

Well Sydney is dodgy full stop.
I paid $13 to get my eyebrows waxed there (and not at a place in Double Bay either) here the average is $6-$8.
Based on my study it is clearly more expensive (and crappier) to live in Sydney. Because I could then only afford to get my eyebrows done once a fortnight which would greatly affect my living standards and ability to socialise.
Not to mention the fact there is NO nightlife there and fashion is blah - white and gold and fluro colours. Gimme Black! Gimme Subversive Nail Polish and give me Opaque stockings!
Debate over.

I live 17 kms from the CBD of Cairns and it takes me 15 minutes to get there!
I live about 4 hours from the MCG, but I admit the fare is about $500.00
Petrol has just gone up to 89 cents a litre!
Prawns have just gone up to $11.99 a kilo!
The weather is perfect for 9 months of the year....
For the other 3 months it's not too bad.
I was born in Sydney and lived a lot of years in Melbourne.
Both have their good and bad points!
Sure I miss the footy. Sure I miss the restaurants, but , hey, I made that choice so I could come and live in Paradise!
My point: this whole argument is POINTLESS.

What people fail to realise in this cost of living debate is that even though it might cost guys living in Sydney in greater outlays for housing, they get higher returns. For eg. if a Melbourne guy moves there and buys a house, or better still and Adelaide boy, he might have to cough up a lot to start with but when he sells he makes a killing in relation to what he can then buys if he returns to his native state.
Housing is the main cost of living difference, a recent survey suggested it is actually more costly to raise a child in Melbourne than in the harbour city.
I like Malty's suggestion though that rather than give them an extra allowance on their salary cap, only give them more, if for instance a Melbourne, or intersate guy wants to return home, then Sydney is allowed more to match or better the offers. This would avoid them exploiting the cap and luring players from intersate such as Hall rather than retaining players.
Otherwise you could argue that clubs such as Collingwood require some sort of allowance as we have many foreign players on our books and have lost a couple in recent years returning home yet were afforded no extra cap room.
Pies light up my world. Davis was the next big thing but now it will be Didak or Cole. Go Pies! |

Actually it was from Nine MSN yesterday. Nine MSN in an internet site.
The only Liverpool that counts is the soccer team in England. Liverpool, Campbelltown and whatever other town you mention may excite you Sydney siders to Melbournians they mean nothing. Im surprised these places would even get included in a Melways.
Sydney is a good stop over destination for a weekend if there isnt anything better to do.
