It was 3 seconds, for (mates with) sake. Anyone who thinks it was time wasting is a muppet or in the case of whatsinaname an opposition supporter troll. But I’m more annoyed about the blatant holds (arms around waist, over shoulder) not paid to Bobby Hill in the last quarter.

Earlier in the quarter, the same umpire asks Steele to hand him the ball, but Steele puts it on the ground. Within the rules, yes, but the ump is clearly pissed off he has to go and get it. You can see the look on his face.
I could make a case that he was looking for a chance to pay back the “favour”.

^^^^

Payback umpiring (if this is actually the case), is so unprofessional and unfair. I guess with the REAL umpires union (the almighty AFL) saying that the umpire was correct, we are left looking at anything that could possibly justify this decision that impacted on us getting 2 instead of 4 points. The maggots shouldn’t umpire in an angry way and let their human emotions dictate their decisions. Extremely unprofessional and not a good example for young umps.

Do you know what quarter and a time stamp?
Or maybe what the score was at the time?

Thanks

Thanks for the link.

In my view there is sufficient doubt in the Hawks example - but there is concern about the lack of consistency more broadly.
However whatever way you look at it it was a very tough decision - especially when our player had his back to the ump. Umpire definitely comes across as egotistical - full of his own importance. Not surprised the AFL would support ump - they nearly always do.
However I have already moved on - but have not forgotten!

Go Pies!

So, it would seem that there is no specific wording in the official rules that says a player cannot hand the ball to a team mate but there is a rule against time wasting. The AFL previously provided written advice to the clubs that players must either leave the ball on the ground or hand it directly to the umpire and advised that handing the ball to a team mate will be deemed to be timewasting,

Nicholl's decision can therefore considered to be correct.

I would argue that this interpretation (of time wasting) is so black & white that there is no excuse for not including it in the official rules.
I wonder what other rules 'memos' are floating around in the ether that we're not aware of.

Ok for sake of argument and consistency in the 3rd term a Fremantle player is tackled by Josh D on the wing. The Fremantle player is last up. Nichols is the umpire. The Fremantle player hands the ball to Darcy while he looks around for where Josh has gone. Darcy stands for a couple seconds looks around and then hands rhe ball to the umpire. Fremantle win the hit ball goes forward and Serong kicks a behind.
So to the letter of the law as the AFL wants to apply it that is a free kick to Collingwood on centre wing and 1 less point to Fremantle.
There’s vision on Facebook of the same thing happening 5 times over the weekends marches without a free being paid.
Nichols should be dropped. If he wants to enforce the rule fine enforce it every time it happens not just when it suits

100% of the time once the umpire has called a stoggage the ball must be left on the ground for the umpire to pick it up problem solved.
they pick it up at all times throw in and ball ups

Definitely should be banished to the reserve teams to suffer for his so called umpiring but he won’t because the “above corruption”, “Nothing to see here”, “We are the best football administrators in the world” AFL have said that the maggot didn’t do anything wrong 😑 Maybe now people will finally realise that the “never to be criticised” maggots have the AFL by the Cohunas. Many years ago, the maggots decided to strike and the then VFL had to use umpires from the under 19’s for the senior games. The fact was that the young umpires did so well that it embarrassed the senior maggots into coming back with their tails between their legs 😝 However the power has again now shifted to the maggots for some reason. A fallacy is that the game cannot go on without the senior umpires. As I mentioned the fact is that history showed that the under 19 umpires did as good a job or better than the precious senior maggots.
