Nick Daicos knew there was something special happening at Collingwood when he saw Scott Pendlebury carrying on.
Jamie Elliott had just sunk Carlton, sending the Magpies into the AFL top four and punting the Blues out of finals in one fell swoop.
As Daicos and his teammates erupted, even the typically subdued Pendlebury couldn't help but charge off the bench, fist-pumping and punching the air.
"I actually spoke to him about it because he's usually very calm and composed, but he went crazy which I love," Daicos told reporters on Thursday.
"It was good to see. You know when he's going crazy that something good's happened. It was awesome."

^Instinctive footy will always be better footy for someone like Scott because discipline and prep are never an issue. But discipline alone doesn't bring you joy. Hearing what you've said, and seeing the smile again on Sidey's face as well, and seeing Pendles care as much about his own enjoyment and that of his temmates, instead of playing a joyless 'role' trying to limit bigger mids and be BOG at the same time, means the spark is back.
Honestly, watching him trying to coordinate a centre bounce last year was a soulless business. I felt sorry for him and Tay. Now, he gets to love footy again as the creative player he is, rather than being a bloody stoppage chess master. And consider that Sidey is even more creative and instinctive than Pendles; little wonder the bloke has that smile back. _________________ In the end the rain comes down, washes clean the streets of a blue sky town.

Pendles has had a superb season. He has captained magnificently. The club is really supporting him and the players now. Great credit to him - best I have seen from him for years - for me, it is the smarts, the selflessness and the skill. What a magnificent player we have had the privilege of seeing. _________________ Daicos, impossible angle ... Goal! |

A decade later and I just refound this thread. Pendles definitely rose above the other names mentioned. |

Could be 6th or 7th by season end, maybe 3rd by the time he's holding next year's Norm Smith |

One more victory and Pendles will be level with Gordon Coventry as the player who has played in the most Collingwood victories.
For the record, the top 10 are:
Gordon Coventry 220
Pendles 219
Harry Collier 193 (from a ridiculously low 253 games)
Sidey 179
Tony Shaw 177
Wayne Richardson 175
Len Thompson 168
Jock McHale 166
Syd Coventry 166
Charlie Dibbs 164

From realfooty
Never knew he was ill. Good to hear he will be back at training. |
Glandular fever hasn't seemed to affect his career too much. |
