I've no idea of the conditions but Williamson's decision to send India in is somewhat baffling. Yes, he has an excellent pace attack - 5 of them - but it means they'll have to bat last, against Ashwin & Jadeja.

India 0/41.

I doubt there will be 4 innings. It looks headed for 3 1/2 days play total (over 6 days).

But maybe the weather forecast is too pessimistic...

Finally, a wicket. And it's that man, Jamieson, again. Sharma goes.

Southee took the catch. What a bonus to have a fast bowler who can field in the slips.

India 1/62.

Pujara comes to the wicket. Has he fixed the technical flaws that crept into his game in the last year or two?

And then Wagner gets Gill caught behind off the third ball he's bowled.

King Kohli is the new man in.

Pujara has now soaked up 30 balls without getting off the mark. Laughing

Pujara off the mark with a 4 on his 34th ball! Laughing

Just when I was wondering what the record was...

Maybe this rush of blood will make him lose his wicket. Wink

Wagner bangs Pujara on the grille. That was predictable. Cool

^ CricViz on social media tells us:

"That's the fourth time Cheteshwar Pujara has been hit on the helmet in the last two years. Only Marnus Labuschagne and Rory Burns have been hit more often in Test cricket during that time."

Whoa! Boult gets Pujara LBW.

Just 2 scoring shots from 54 balls! Lucky for him and India they were both 4s!

FOW 3/88.

Rahane, next man in, gets off the mark immediately.

Only 64.4 overs bowled after the 2nd/1st day.

India 3/146 at stumps.

Then that man Jamieson again takes an early wicket on day 3. And a big one: Kohli.

New man Pant takes 20 balls to get off the mark with a 4...

... but 2 balls later, he nicks off! Jamieson again!

India 5/156 (73.4).

Jamieson 3/21 (18.4). Exclamation

Wagner gets Rahane (49) with the short ball.

India 6/182 (78.4).
Wagner 2/40.

Ashwin joins Jadeja at the crease.

Will the soggy conditions help the spinners later in the match? Question

NZ have not immediately taken the new ball.

The old ball is doing enough...

... as it always should in Test cricket. No decent Test batsman should get out if the ball does nothing at all. It's been a sad race to the bottom in the last two decades. The batsmen get worse and worse. They make pitches flatter and flatter. So the batsmen get even worse. So they make the pitches even flatter. Then the batsmen whinge like piglets being slaughtered if there's any movement at all. And folks allow cricket to be destroyed while becoming fanboys of flat-track bullies like Smith.

The only things this Test could do better on are the emergency day and the light issue. Ideally, it'd have two or three emergency days to make sure there isn't a rain-caused draw.

NZ take the new ball midway through the 82nd over.

They'll want to get these two out quickly. Then there's just the true tail.

250 might be a very competitive total.
