^ Yes, good call. That isn't a category that's been kept for long, though. Where he would get recognized would be in "Marks". He's on target to take 186 marks for the season, which would see him rank 7th all-time for us. If he has a slightly better second half of the season, he could easily reach 3rd all-time (193 marks would do it). That would be a fine effort, because it would actually be the highest-ever for Collingwood in a season in which the Club didn't play finals.

Anyone who read the excellent article in today’s Herald-Sun on Marlion Pickett would concede luck plays an all important part in human events. He struck out as a kid on the wrong side of the tracks, spent time in a Western Australian jail, then found himself at the right time and place in the WAFL competition when Richmond came calling. Now he’s played in two premiership sides. You don’t have to be the mostly talented kid to play in a premiership team. For some it happens. Every year it happens for 22 AFL players. For most others it never happens.

I'd say we've had some "bad luck" with injuries over recent years. What does that mean we are not good at?

Conditioning and injury management.

People who aren't very good at things love to attribute failure to "bad luck". Chance does, of course, always play a part - but narratives based upon a fiction that "the universe is against us" are pointless.

If you look at the stats over a long period, what you discern, instead, is a general pattern that our very best players had their better years when we went to the Grand Final. ...

Bizarre reasoning.

How do you reckon the bolded claim disproves luck existing? Question Shocked Confused

^ Russell was a magnificent player. His 1990 was one of the finest seasons ever played by a Collingwood midfielder.

Loved Scotty Russell. When he kicked a goal in the third quarter of the second semi in 1990 as a result of a turnover I knew we’d win the flag

So, apart from Grundy (all the usual haters will be delighted to know that his 2021 - already and without him playing any further games this season - is number 19 for hit-outs, just shading Jolly's 2011), who do you think could have a "top 20" season in 2021? I'd have thought no-one because our team is largely awful in most positions.

Apart from Moore... Pendlebury, Mayne, Crisp and Roughead would be top 10 in some positive stats. Crisp the only multiple? Steele in clangers

No-one is in for an all-time Collingwood top 20 season for disposals, at the moment.

Mayne isn't top-20 all-time for anything that anyone counts.

Roughead is up there for one-percenters, this season, if that's of interest.

Sidebottom is behind Crisp for clangers, since you mention it.

Who says the concept of luck has no place in football? Warren Ralph didn't win first division Tattslotto using skill.

Or you’re the coach of a team that’s comprised of Franklin, Hodge, Mitchell, Rioli, Roughead, Birchall, Burgoyne, Gibson, Lake, Sewell, Smith, Shiels, Lewis, Breust, Guerra, Puopolo, Gunston….and everyone thinks you’re the reason you’re winning.

Fairly valid point I'd say Zed Wink
