"The Indian Premier league match between the Kolkata Knights Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore has been cancelled, after two of the Knight Riders players reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

According to Cricinfo, spinner Varun Chakravarthy and seamer Sandeep Warriors are the two affected players.

The team is coached by Kiwi great Brendon McCullum, with current Blackcaps players Lockie Ferguson and Tim Seifert both members of the squad, all of whom - along with the rest of their teammates and staff - have tested negative."

The entire IPL competition has been suspended until further notice due to the terrible spreading of Covid 19 in India. Awful situation.

"IPL 2021 has been postponed, following several positive Covid-19 cases across franchises over the past couple of days. The move was confirmed by IPL chairman Brijesh Patel, who said it was for the safety of all stakeholders.

In a media statement, the IPL said the decision was "unanimously" taken by the tournament's Governing Council along with the top brass of the BCCI. "The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff and the other participants involved in organising the IPL," the statement said. "This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and wellbeing of all the stakeholders in mind."

"A group of English counties has offered to host the remainder of the IPL 2021 season in September this year.

The MCC, Surrey and Warwickshire, who are based at Lord's, The Kia Oval (both London) and Edgbaston (Birmingham), respectively are understood to be part of the group who wrote to the ECB inviting them to extend the opportunity to the BCCI. The plans would see the tournament completed in around two weeks in the second half of September."

"[Glenn Maxwell] scored 56 from just 37 balls, with three sixes and six fours, then claimed 2-23 with his off-breaks as the Royal Chargers Bangalore easily accounted for the Mumbai Indians.
...

His dominant display came after earlier scores of 10 and 11, but he was not the only Australian to start the IPL slowly. David Warner’s first two scores for Sunrisers Hyderabad were 0 and 2, from a total of six balls.

At least Warner has been afforded the opportunity of making it to the crease, after being dropped earlier in the tournament.

Ricky Ponting may have been one of Australian cricket’s greatest servants but he is doing his home country no favours as coach of Delhi Capitals.

Steve Smith, with a likely move down to number five, will be an important player for Australia during the T20 World Cup but Ponting has left him out of the Delhi side for its two matches since the IPL restart.

Ponting must be doing something right as coach, the Capitals are currently equal first on 16 points with Chennai Super Kings."

(M. Conn, The Age)

[Punter has to do the best thing for his team. And Smith is not up to it at IPL level. That's why he was almost overlooked at the auction after failing in previous seasons.]
