^ and with all the sophisticated 'elegant' programming they still fail; they might as well have a code dunce like me programming it.

PTID is 100% correct.

(EDIT: and so is Stui, who just posted.)

This has nothing to do with code sophistication and nothing to do with bias, and everything to do with Twitter's business model (which is the same as Google business model, and Facebook's).

They spend as close to zero as they can possibly manage on delivering the service: no moderators, no help desk, no human complaints department, no-one authorised to answer questions, no-one authorised to speak to the media, every single possible expense is cut to the bone.

This allows them to offer their service free of charge. In return, they get near-zero-cost products to sell.

You are one of those products.

You know the old saying "If you can't find the price for a product, you ARE the product"? Never was this more true than it is in the case of Twitter, Google, Facebook and the others. They are able to get you for almost nothing because they spend almost nothing on the things that any normal company has to provide as routine.

And they get away with this three card trick over and over again because anytime someone pulls them up and says:

"Excuse me, what about this spectacularly bad thing you just did" they say

"Not our fault. It was the algorithm." And people fall for it! Every time!

What they actually mean is "It is entirely our fault because we deliberately decided not to comply with our responsibilities".
