Isn’t the only possibility that we get a remix of “Our Steve BradSmith”? What else would bring “us” all “together”?

A Sunrise poll!? Ah well, I feel this is at least moving in the right direction. Laughing

There doesn't seem to have been too many polls, that's the closest I could find to something mainstream. Outside the inner city lefty bubble I think you'll find pretty broad support for keeping it. As for changing words to fit the current political climate, that's even more cringe worthy than the song itself.

Look, it's a shit song, but it's OUR shit song. That was why we dropped God Save the Queen, because it was shared with the Mother Country and by the 70s Australia was very much its own entity. There's no great push or need for change now.

^ Well, as I wrote earlier in the thread, I'm not terribly inclined to get rid of Advance Australia Fair, and would probably prefer to keep it; whereas changing a single word to be more up-to-date and representative of what the country stands for seems pretty harmless. But the problem with polls like the one above, beyond the fact that they're unscientific and only really reflective of the views of a commercial breakfast TV audience, is it's not clear what is being asked or what respondents think is being asked.

I'm not necessarily certain that you'd get a majority voting for a single line or word change – people are, by their nature, reticent to change something without a strong reason – but I think a lot of people would be fine with it. It'll be hard to know whether that bears out statistically unless we get reliable polling data with a specific question (i.e. 'do you think the word "young" in the national anthem should be changed to "one"')?

If the government chooses to, it can change the words to the National Anthem without a poll or a referendum. Im not even sure if they need a vote in Parliament. Just do it.

Well, what do you know...

https://www.theage.com.au/national/now-is-the-time-to-recognise-that-australia-is-one-and-free-20201231-p56r39.html

I think this points to something about Morrison that I’ve suspected for a long time: he’s not really a true conservative. Howard or Abbott would never have done this, but a Labor PM might well have and a Greens leader might have called for it out of a genuine belief in its moral import. But Morrison is an ideology-free zone. In that sense, he represents everything about the modern Liberal Party: the goal is to retain power at all costs, look after the interests of capital, exercise power ruthlessly and wade into the culture wars only when one presents the opportunity for an easy win. In this case he’s actually happy to piss the right-wing culture warriors off because he knows it sucks the oxygen out of the next soft-left symbolic-change movement and that this ultimately won’t hurt him politically.

Simple change, good change. If it makes the indigenous people happier, no brainer.

^Eminently sensible change.

Australia is on a roll — first managing lockdown with vigilance, now smartly making national progress without hysteria.

Shocked Wink

I guess you’re being flippant, but what would really be meaningful would be a treaty (yes, perhaps entailing some territorial autonomy/sovereignty if it’s sought). All this cosmetic stuff like constitutional recognition and changing a word in the anthem is harmless and might help a little, but at some stage we have to put our money where our mouth is.

Wouldn't that be like somebody sticking up a 7/11 and expecting praise for giving back "some" of the stolen money?
