Who are our untouchables?

I see Brody Mihocek has been offered an extension, with terms to still to be negotiated. If agreement is reached, he'll finally be off the rookie list, which is about bloody time!!!!!

I'm no contract or salary cap expert, and there's still a lot to happen re; list size, but from the players listed as out of contract;

To Re-Sign
Brody Mihocek
Darcy Moore
Jack Madgen
Jordan De Goey
Jordan Roughead Already Re-Signed
Josh Daicos
Mason Cox Has Been Extended

To Retire
Ben Reid already has
Lynden Dunn

Likely To Be De-Listed/Traded
Matthew Scharenberg
Max Lynch
Rupert Wills
Tim Broomhead
Flynn Appleby

Keep one of:
Anton Tohill
Atu Bosenavulagi
Mark Keane

Keep one of:
Travis Varcoe
Levi Greenwood

That's a lot of players off the list, more if you include Beams and possibly Mayne and Langdon.

Is ten or more changes too much? Does that give us room to target a decent free agent or trade target?

An interesting conundrum. Every club must strike a balance between hanging onto players too long and throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We must retain the likes of Sidey, Howe, Pendles, Crisp, Grundy (our senior core) plus the 'next level' players (our next 'veterans, as it were), plus a steady supply of younger ones to carry on.

The AFL, in my view, has let down a lot of the clubs by not being transparent about the final list numbers permissible for 2021. Once this is known, we will have a better idea of how many will go.

I think the club will have a fair idea of 'retirees' about now (Reid, Dunn, Langdon, Beams and so on)

There will be players who we have had a good look at that may be deemed to have reached their ceiling and can be let go (Appleby, Broomhead, Wills, Lynch, )

Trade bait, some for third or fourth round picks only (Thomas, Scharenberg, ).
Some contracted players might be on the trade table: (Sier/Hoskin-Elliott/Phillips/Mayne).

A hard call needs to be made- one of Varcoe or Greenwood will possibly be let go (my preference would be Greenwood as our best 'tagger' to be retained, although I think that Varcoe would be a good winger if Phillips were traded.)

If the club is keen on Gunston, they must chase him- hard. However, we cant lose a Daicos, Moore , Mihocek or De Goey in the process.

So many variables in the mix of list management and so much calamity if you get it wrong. Without dredging up the Beams fiasco once more, trading for an ageing player and then giving him a four year deal with minimal return on investment, has proved very harmful for our prospects of getting others (say a Lynch or a Jeremy Cameron).

Lets hope we 'get it right'. For those who are moved on or retire, lets acknowledge the fact that they have given of their best for the Black and White and wish them well in their futures- however that looks.

Floreat Pica everyone.

^^^ Yet another set of 'quality observations' from WL.

I think the key factor influencing all list decisions over the coming weeks is whether the club believes that we are a realistic chance of winning the flag next year. If they do, then they'll limit the number of changes and just search for some quick fixes (like Gunston).

Personally, I don't think we can win the flag next year. With Pendles aging and Sidebottom taggable, we no longer have a premiership standard midfield. And there doesn't appear to be any developing young talent on the list to replace these two.
Similarly, there is a distinct lack of talent in the forward line.

These problems can't be fixed in a single trade\draft period. I hope the hard heads at the club rule the day and insist on the tough decisions on delistings and retirements.

Not 2021 but be better placed in 2022 as we will have a new coach and its no longer the pathetic buckley coaching them.

Untouchables: Pendlebury, Moore, JDG, Howe, Adams, Maynard, Grundy, Crisp.

Re-sign: Madgen, Daicos, Moore, JDG, Mihocek.

Extend: Maynard.

I cannot remember a “bad” post from WL. He is always spot on and his observations are astute and informative. Excellent poster.

There's a limit to players who can be considered untouchable IMO. But yeah, Daicos could be added to the list. I'm indifferent about the rest although Roughie is an important structural pillar.

Just want to mention that a couple of years ago Max Lynch did well in the 2km time trial. I think that's fairly special for a big guy. He also seems more aggressive at the ball than most.
Just want to say I'm not wanting to give up on him. I think he still has plenty of upside as a 22 - 23 yo

It sounds like the list size will be 40 plus 2 rookies or 38 plus 4 rookies but no idea on International and CatB etc but we need to draft (or upgrade a minimum of 3)

It appears that we will have

Retirees: Reid, Dunne (Rookie), Varcoe, Langdon (unfortunately) and Beams

Players who have been around Scharenberg, Lynch, Wills, Broomie, Apples, Atu, (I think keep Lynch & Apples the others well its time but Apples was a Rookie? then maybe Atu but after the draft) but its time Sorry Broomie

Tohill, Keane and Wilson not sure what happens to list add ons but Keane deserves more than 1 game and is the closest Tohill & Wilson I think are a long way off but really needed the VFL this year as did Rantall, Bianco and Atu

Then we have Sier, Phillips, Murphy, Thomas some might add Mayne but I think he already has another year locked in. I think Sier & Murphy stay. Phillips has been as timid as Stevo without any of the issues.

So I reckon 6 spots and 2 rookies.

Checkers gets upgraded we have Reef under NGA and I hope we get a pick before we have to take him.

Mayne & Greenwood go around again probably only 1 more for both,

Cameron is contracted for 2 more???
