IF Gunston did make his way to Collingwood, he would automatically be the smartest forward to appear in our forward 50 for a number of years.

He’s the sort of player who would make DeGoey and Stephensons life much easier because the opposition have another scoreboard impact forward to think about ( as opposed to a scrubby defensive forward who doesn’t hurt you on the scoreboard )
He’s a seriously smart forward and is coming from a very successful professional club. I wouldn’t underestimate the benefits of his knowledge and experience because the advice he would pass on to the other front five players, would be immeasurable.
He’s durable and he kicks clutch goals. He also plays well against the best and we don’t have many forwards who can lay claim to that.
I wouldn’t think any trade would be anything over the top. We start the trade period with our first pick and TWO late second round picks ( and the futures if that’s suitable to the Hawks ) so giving up one of those second rounders wouldn’t impact our draft hand to badly.
The biggest knock is his age but if he was any younger, then the trade off would be of higher value.
I remain open minded but like most of off season trade talk, very little of it ever comes to fruition anyway.

If Reef goes lower than 12 then we maybe able to get a great player at 12 and then Reef quickly after. WE could use a combination of the 2 second round draft picks and our fourth round.
Can't be bothered going through the points.
Notice Hawks have 4 picks inside pick 42.
They are trying to build a war chest.

Yep. Ideally, we want to be able to select a player BEFORE ( I’m just rephrasing the way you explained it ) McInnes name is called out by another club. That would give us two quality kids inside the first round.
If McInnes name was called out at pick 14 / 15 on the night ( a very possible outcome ) and after we had already selected someone else prior, we would need those two late second rounders and more, likely an early third or another late second ( Fourth round is worthless ) Thankfully, the beauty of trading futures is that we have so much more flexibility to achieve the above ( Nick Daicos selection aside )
The machinations in this draft are off the charts. There will probably be compensation picks the AFL will hand out for the restricted free agents who swap clubs as well as the points required for all those N G A players.
If the N G A players are as good as what as they say and with so many of them, there is every chance our second rounders could be a little earlier in the draft than where they currently sit. It also means trading for better draft positions will be less challenging than previous years because so many clubs need to play the points swapping game this year.

Of course when we win the flag, then all those permutations go out the window anyway 😉

If we lose next week most of this stays the same excepting what happens with Richmond and St Kilda in their finals.

Giants have had more first rounders than anyone in the history of the draft and they still haven't won a flag. So I hope our club doesn't throw the baby out with the bathwater in search of early draft picks.

Gunston isn’t worth a second rounder let alone a first round pick. There’s only one forward we should concentrate on and that’s Jeremy Cameron. If Peter Wright comes cheap he’s another possible. The rest are peripheral to our needs.

In today's Hun:

Hawthorn has no plans to release forward Jack Gunston to a premiership contender for next season as Collingwood circles the ace goal kicker.

Gunston, 28, is understood to be open to considering all options at season’s end as the Hawks look to rebuild.

While Alastair Clarkson is not one to wave the white flag, his team is unlikely to be in premiership contention for at least next season.

Collingwood is keen to sharpen up its forward connection and Gunston would be a perfect addition to help partner De Goey in attack.

But the Hawks are planning to keep Gunston and are not yet entertaining any form of trade for the former Crow.

The Magpies would have to offer something really enticing or Gunston would have to demand to be released for his contract for the deal to happen.

Gunston has two more years on his contract and is believed to be on about $500,000 a season.

He had another strong year in the brown and gold and will finish high in the club’s best and fairest award next week.

Past his prime imo. If he's much chop why would the Hawks be offloading him?

Past his prime?

He was equal third highest goalkicker this season. The Hawks don't want to offload him.

It’ll probably be a direct swap with Elliott

Look at the Picks Geelong have. We need to really clean out the recruiting dept this post-season.

Our draft picks are woeful for a team that has played in a GF and PF for the past two seasons, and no finals 5 years before that.

Yeah
geelong has 3 picks in the top 20 this year.
Chance of winning the flag this year.
Well they did lose Kelly to the west coast last year
The deal was that the Cats received selections 14, 24 and 37 in the 2019 AFL national draft and the Eagles first selection in the 2020 AFL national draft in return for Kelly.
Shows you that getting rid of a star could lead to opportunities in the future.
