Unless he has a big second dig, Kohli will lose points after the 2nd. New Zealand Test where he was out for 3.

There's a fair gap to Williamson, in third, but that could close right up with a substantial innings from the NZ skip.

He has not scored a 50 outside India since December 2018. He has two centuries, since then - 254* against SA in Pune (in an innings in which the other 5 of the Indian top 6 scored 108, 14, 58, 59 and 91, so it can't have been a terrible track) and 136 against Bangladesh at Kolkata. Apart from those two hundreds, his scores in the last 3 series (SA, Bangladesh and NZ) have been 20, 31*, 12, 0, 2, 9, 3 and 14. His Test average in 2020, so far, is 9.5.

Williamson (#3 in the ratings): Managed only 3 & 5 in the just completed Test.

Kohli (#2): 3 & 14.

Rahane, #8: 7 & 9.

Agarwal (#10): 7 & 3.

Only Pujara (#9) contributed, with 54 & 24.

Labu may regain the #3 spot.

Since his last century, Williamson has scored 154 runs in 7 innings @ 22 in Tests.

Back to his previous ton, he managed just 153 in 6 innings @ 25.5

Hardly the numbers for the 'World's best batsman', K ?

Kohli ? Last 7 Test innings: 153 @ 26.57

Gotta toss this one in, for fun. Labuschagne: Last 8 Test innings: 886 runs @ 110.75 Smile

No, only Steve Smith is a flat-track bully.

The others did not get the chance to bat in the flat-track era. (Some of them even batted in the era of uncovered pitches.) You must know this but are too invested in maintaining the Myth of Smith.

Did you enjoy his painful 1 off 29 balls at an average per life of 0.5 from Adelaide? It was like watching someone struggling with coronavirus. There was nothing wrong with the pitch, especially at the time he batted (the best time to bat in these matches). Just a teeny weeny bit of help for the bowlers was too much for him to handle.

Smith has a defective technique. He is a flat-track bully.

Pat Cummins increased his rating by 6 points but Hazlewood rocketed up (769 to 805) after his 5/8 in the Adelaide day/nighter.

Kane Williamson is the ICC #1-ranked batsman to end 2020.
Virat Kohli is #2.
(This despite costing themselves points by taking paternity leaves.)

Pat Cummins is the #1-ranked bowler.
Stuart Broad is #2.

But you know what I think about the ICC (or anyone's) rankings... They should not be taken too seriously. It's extremely difficult to do this kind of thing sensibly. Certainly, the people who do it for the ICC or anyone else are not up to the task. (Well, let me expand. Comparisons of current form of current players may have a little value. Comparisons of players from different eras is a task totally beyond them.)

I have always felt this to be the case but not had the courage of my convictions to post it. I believe you are spot on. Extremely rarely are they logically, actually and factually able to compare apples with apples. However it presents some amusing episodes of fun facts to be taken with a huge grain of salt.

Smith mark 2.0 should retire hes a hack of a batter these days nothing like Smith mark 1.0.

Same can be said Warner mark 2.0 to Warner mark 1.0

Both Smith and Warner have been hacks since the sand paper saga.

Well, maybe we should wait and see a bit longer. It could be that oppo bowlers have worked him out. Or it could be the ageing process. Once his eyes start going, the downfall could be rapid. But he's not all that old (turning 32 this year). OTOH, if a miracle occurs and the cricket world starts preparing pitches that are fairer to bowlers, then he's in strife.

cricinfo says "he has averaged 26.40 since the 2019 Ashes". I'd like to see his SR too... Okay, it's SR 34.33. On flat pitches, that's way too low.

The forgotten Joe Root is younger. cricinfo reports he turned 30 this week and had a "frustrating summer".

"England have won each of their last three Test series ... but without significant contributions from their captain. Root averaged 41.61 against South Africa, West Indies and Pakistan, with a highest score of 68 not out, and his last century came on the tour of New Zealand in November 2019..."

Gotta say: 41.61 is better than 26.40.
