Manchester City have been banned from participating in the Champions League and Europa League for the next two season (2020/2021 and 2021/2022 seasons) and fined $48,000,000 Australian Dollars, which translates to 30 Million Euros.

They've been fined because of breaches to the Financial Fair Play (FFP) rules.

Manchester City banned from Champions League for two seasons by UEFA

"Manchester City have been banned from European competition for the next two seasons and fined €30 million by European soccer's governing body UEFA after an investigation into alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play rules.

UEFA said in a statement that City had committed "serious breaches" of the rules while the Premier League club swiftly said they intended to appeal the decision to the Lausanne-based Court of Arbitration for Sport.
...

"The Adjudicatory Chamber, having considered all the evidence, has found that Manchester City Football Club committed serious breaches of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations by overstating its sponsorship revenue in its accounts and in the break-even information submitted to UEFA between 2012 and 2016," read a UEFA statement.
...

"Simply put, this is a case initiated by UEFA, prosecuted by UEFA and judged by UEFA. With this prejudicial process now over, the Club will pursue an impartial judgment as quickly as possible and will therefore, in the first instance, commence proceedings with the Court of Arbitration for Sport at the earliest opportunity," the club said.
...

Manchester City has assembled one of the best, and most expensive, teams in the world through the backing and financial might of the club's owner: Sheik Mansour bin Zayed al-Nahyan, brother of the ruler of the United Arab Emirates. Sheik Mansour has invested hundreds of millions of dollars over the past two decades – on players, coaches, facilities and the team's operations – to transform Manchester City, which played in England's second tier as recently as 2002, into one of soccer's biggest and most successful clubs."

Massive news and has big ramifications for the rest of the season.

Assuming the CL ban is upheld, we give ourselves a massive chance to qualify for the Champions League and consolidate the good work that's been produced by Frank thus far.

Interesting times ahead for City.

- Will the appeal be successful?
- Will Pep stay at the club beyond this season?
- Will there be a mass exodus by the playing squad?
- How do they go about rebuilding their squad successfully despite the ban?
- Will further punishments be awaiting them on the domestic front such as a points deduction?
- Could the City owners consider selling?

Many unanswered questions, but the next few weeks and months are going to be intriguing. A lot of clubs will be cheering this decision.

Liverpool fans will no doubt be wanting EPL points penalties to be applied to last season, not this season when it's irrelevant, or next season when it's probably also irrelevant.

An interesting aside in the NYT article is "Manchester City, which played in England's second tier as recently as 2002". I'm wondering which clubs have never dropped to the second tier. All of the usual suspects and no one else?

Manchester City was last in the second tier in 2001/2002.

Chelsea was last in the second tier in 1988/1989.

Tottenham Hotspur was last in the second tier in 1977/1978.

Manchester United was last in the second tier in 1974/1975.

Liverpool was last in the second tier in 1961/1962.

Everton was last in the second tier in 1953/1954.

Man City's statements thus far sound like empty bombast.

"Simply put, this is a case initiated by UEFA, prosecuted by UEFA and judged by UEFA."

I mean, that's how it's always worked in sport. (One could say it was sort of initiated by damning German newspaper reports, not by UEFA.)

"Manchester City will discover on Monday whether their appeal against a two-year UEFA ban from European football has been successful, the Court of Arbitration for Sport announced on Friday.
...

Without Champions League football, City could miss out on at least 100 million in prize money and broadcast revenue, as well as matchday and other income."

The ban has been overturned. City are free to play Champions League football next season. City's fine has been cut from 30m euros to 10m euros.

Seems as though as long as you cook the books but don't get caught for 5 years, you can get away with anything.

UEFA statement:

Quote:
UEFA takes note of the decision taken by the Court of Arbitration for Sport to reduce the sanction imposed on Manchester City FC by UEFA’s independent Club Financial Control Body for alleged breaches of the UEFA Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play regulations.

UEFA notes that the CAS panel found that there was insufficient conclusive evidence to uphold all of the CFCB’s conclusions in this specific case and that many of the alleged breaches were time-barred due to the 5 year time period foreseen in the UEFA regulations.

Over the last few years, Financial Fair Play has played a significant role in protecting clubs and helping them become financially sustainable and UEFA and ECA remain committed to its principles.

UEFA will be making no further comments on the matter.

Manchester City statement:

Quote:
Whilst Manchester City and its legal advisors are yet to review the full ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), the Club welcomes the implications of today’s ruling as a validation of the Club’s position and the body of evidence that it was able to present. The Club wishes to thank the panel members for their diligence and the due process that they administered.

City were under investigation by the PL for 4 years.

I think this might be a watershed moment for the PL. If City are not punished for these alleged breaches, I can see the Super League having a resurgence.
