These are the most recent Ashes Tests I can find:

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/13659/scorecard/345973/england-vs-australia-4th-test-australia-tour-of-england-and-scotland-2009

[4th Test, 2009: Australia won by an innings and 80 runs.]

https://www.espncricinfo.com/series/15533/scorecard/63939/england-vs-australia-4th-test-australia-tour-of-england-and-ireland-2001

[4th Test, 2001: England won by 6 wickets.]

(This was the one where Gilchrist made a silly, silly declaration to throw away an Ashes Test.)

Am I missing some, or does Headingley often miss out on hosting an Ashes Test?

"James Anderson will play for Lancashire's second XI in a three-day game against Leicestershire ... this week instead of linking up with the Ashes squad in Headingley, as England's selectors named an unchanged 12-man squad for the third Test..."

(cricinfo)

The article also says Root's golden duck was the first of his Test career.

"Under the terms of the Cricket Australia policy on concussion and head trauma, Smith needs to make a staged return to physical activity, and the initial step would be light training at the team’s main session two days before the third Test. ...

If he is not well enough to train at Headingley on Tuesday, he could be scratched from the third Test by then.

To play again, Smith must also pass the SCAT5 assessment, which tests memory, balance and concentration, and the CogSport computerised cognitive testing, which is measured against previously recorded baseline results.

He fell behind his baseline results in one component of his CogSport test on Sunday, according to the report Australia handed to ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle to apply for a concussion substitute. The report, completed by Saw, said Smith was also experiencing ‘‘dizziness, feeling slowed down, feeling in a fog ... and drowsiness’’."

Mark Nicholas, cricinfo:

"Goodness knows what the selectors will do with the top of the order. Surely they can see Root's discombobulation at three. He must go back to four, his position of mental karma, and the others can play musical chairs. One guesses they will stick with Roy for another game on the basis of the reasons for his selection in the first place. Maybe Joe Denly and Root will simply swap positions in the batting order, or perhaps Denly will open and Roy slip down. Or will Roy miss out? See, it's damn difficult. So too for Australia. Neither David Warner nor Cameron Bancroft can make a trick; Usman Khawaja is hardly long runs. Fancy that - England and Australia short a top three. It was never thus."

For the Aussies. Possible:

One opener to be dropped. Harris in.

Labu in if Smith can't make it.

If Smith in, Wade could be replaced by Labu. Or Marsh.

Cummins rested. Patto or Starc in.

Sids may join Cummins, on the bench. Both Patto & Starc in.

No, you haven't missed some - those are the most recent Tests Australia has played there: http://stats.espncricinfo.com/england/engine/records/team/match_results.html?class=1;id=179;type=ground

M. Knox:

How Australia became the Invincibles at wild, woolly Headingley

https://www.theage.com.au/sport/cricket/how-australia-became-the-invincibles-at-wild-woolly-headingley-20190819-p52ijt.html

"Bradman was tense. ... After Old Trafford, his vice-captain Lindsay Hassett joined former players Bill O'Reilly and Jack Fingleton, now journalists and no fans of Bradman, on a Guinness-drinking tour of Ireland. Opening bowlers Keith Miller and Ray Lindwall went out most nights, and Bradman assigned the team masseur, Arthur James, to sit up in the hotel reception to record what time they returned.
...

Bradman's arrival, at 1-57, brought what he called the "greatest [ovation] I have ever received from any public anywhere in the world". The Leeds people had seen his best, but they were cheering him farewell, not welcome. His series had been moderate, with a gritty hundred in the first Test followed by a run of failures. He was nearly 40 and just about done.

When England fluffed two chances off Bradman in an over of Compton's part-time spin, Miller began to pack his bags for the bus trip to the tour game at Derby.
...

As the impossible became inevitable, the tension ebbed. Australia were going to win, and win easily, even when Morris fell for 182 after a 301-run stand with Bradman and Miller went cheaply. Bradman and Harvey steered Australia home with 15 minutes to spare. ...

That last day at Headingley, though Morris top-scored, Bradman's unbeaten 173 "earned the better part of his knighthood", journalist Denzil Batchelor wrote. Jim Laker had the "uncanny impression" that Bradman knew "where the ball was going to pitch, and to know how many runs he was going to score". By the final Test match, England were demoralised, knowing that Australia could win from any position, no matter how dire."

Steve Smith set to miss third Test after sitting out first Leeds training

https://www.smh.com.au/sport/cricket/steve-smith-set-to-miss-third-test-after-sitting-out-first-leeds-training-20190820-p52j36.html

"His non-participation all but confirmed he would miss the third Test, having admitted he had needed to train on Tuesday and then face fast bowling in the nets on Wednesday – as well as pass concussion tests – to get the all clear."

Update: The article looks like it's been updated now. Marnus was hit again in the nets:

"... Marnus Labuschagne is set to be the player to replace him again at Leeds, expected to slot straight in at No.4 ... Labuschagne was also felled by an Archer bumper at Lord's and copped another one in the grille of his helmet at training on Tuesday from a Mitchell Starc short ball. He was cleared to continue after being assessed by Saw."

' "Personally, I think Jason probably is suited to the middle order," Bayliss said as England arrived for training in Leeds ... "We've selected him at the top of the order because of his form in the one-day team, but it's obviously not quite the same as opening the batting in a white ball game."
...

... it appears there is disagreement within the England management over the best usage of Roy. While Bayliss and Joe Root, the team captain, would appear to believe he is best suited to a middle-order spot, the chief selector, Ed Smith, is keen for Joe Denly to be given an extended opportunity at No. 4, meaning the only space for Roy remains as an opener.
...

While Bayliss also suggested England would consider drafting in Sam Curran for Chris Woakes for Headingley, it remains likely they will be unchanged with Ben Stokes batting at No. 5 and Jos Buttler at No. 6, as was the case in the second innings at Lord's. Woakes was the only one of the seamers utilised at Lord's who bowled in training on Tuesday.'

Mark Taylor:

"They say catches win matches and I think if Australia had held all theirs at Lord's they may well have been heading into the third Test at Headingley with a 2-0 lead in the Ashes.

It was for that reason I popped my head into training in Leeds two days out from the match, mainly to offer a bit of advice about exactly where I think the slips fieldsmen should be standing, particularly to Nathan Lyon, who is such a genuine weapon for Australia over here and will remain so especially if the wickets are going to keep turning.
...

Having been on the Cricket Australia board when concussion substitutes were introduced in domestic cricket, I'm obviously big supporter of the concept. In fact, I remember raising the issue of substitutes in general with the ICC Cricket Committee when I was last on it five or six years ago. Back then the discussion was mainly about bowlers breaking down early in a game – just as James Anderson did at Edgbaston – and how that disadvantages a team. I know it breaks with the tradition of the game but I believe in such a scenario it becomes an unfair contest, with one team having to play most of the match with 10 players against 11."

A day out, with Smith out, England are heavy favourites to win the third Test.

Odds:
England 57%
Oz 30%
Draw 14%

"England have avoided their own concussion drama with opening batter Jason Roy cleared to play in the third Test after being struck in the nets at training on Tuesday.

Roy was hit in the back of the neck by assistant coach Marcus Trescothick, who was using a modified ball thrower at Headingley and was immediately checked by the team's doctor."

(cricket.com.au)

"While he is thought highly likely to be declared fit to play, England will have Ollie Pope on standby should Roy display any symptoms of delayed concussion. If that happens, and Roy misses out, Joe Denly would be promoted to open the batting alongside Rory Burns and Pope would slot into the middle-order. Pope and Dominic Sibley were on unofficial standby during the second Test at Lord's in the understanding that Sibley would come in for a top-order batsman and Pope for a middle-order batsman."

(cricinfo)

[I reckon Oz is better off with Roy opening for England than out of the team injured.]

Bancroft set to be dumped and replaced by Harris for third Test

"But it is Harris who is poised to play in Leeds in a team that will also include Marnus Labuschagne at No.4, where he batted when he was a concussion substitute for Steve Smith at Lord's, and most likely James Pattinson, who may come into the side for Peter Siddle."

(C. Barrett, SMH)

'Australia's final XI will not be confirmed until the coin toss in Leeds, but Australia's selectors have already shown through the Ashes and preceding World Cup campaign they are not afraid to make bold selection calls. The changes were first reported in News Corp publications.
...

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting said earlier this week's Bancroft's inability to push on after getting starts would be a cause for concern for the Australian set-up.

"I'm sure there'll be a bit of chat about Bancroft and his position," Ponting told cricket.com.au. "Once again, he was able to hang in there for a while.

"But generally when batsmen get through that, you'd expect to go on and make some runs.

"At the moment, he's getting through the hardest bit and then not going on. I'm sure there'll be some chat and concern about that." '
