Why is there always a call to change something? Seriously, just leave it the way it is... you know, like black n white stripes on a jumper!

That's unkind, David. As a kid, I was very fond of John Williamson.

"He can't fly but I'm telling you, he can run the pants off a kangaroo".

Now there's an appropriately Australian-sounding refrain, given that the chorus of "My Boomerang Won't Come Back" is no longer politically acceptable.

(On reflection, it's not just the refrain: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bp0C61PbrLk ) Shocked

im not getting that song out of my head today am I! I still remember a brilliant night at dome pub on the beach in Frankston with Goanna or what ever they were called belting this out! It was magnificent! Don’t know all the words I confess, but what a beat!

My Grandad bought me the single of My boomerang won't come back when I was about 10. Wish I had it now in pristine conditions. Charlie Drake was from a long line of British comedians who today would be in jail for entertainment crimes against the PC brigades.

Just to pissoff The Donald I would propose US forces.

That's just a little note on the dark side of becoming too excited about one's "country".

It's all very well to have an anthem (mine is "Crossroads": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF5fQXVZGug ) and, I suppose, even to want to stand for it yourself (my political stance on this is that I always stand when Ginger drums) - it's when you demand that others stand that such an abstract concept becomes truly dangerous.

Anyway, how anyone could get excited by the rubbish piece of music that presently passes itself off as Australia's "national" anthem is beyond me - it only modulates very predictably to the dominant and back twice and has no interesting harmonic movement at all. The only decent thing about the chords is that, with a little rearrangement and a Martin D-35 in hand, you can turn them into "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u-Y3KfJs6T0 Now there's a truly great song. That's, of course, because it's a mildly detached, humorous paean to regret and cynicism, containing no patriotic bilge.

And don't tell me that a national anthem's "just a song to sing together" - so was Haydn's "God Save Emperor Francis" when he wrote it in 1797 but, despite being a beautiful tune, it got set with some words that were a little too patriotic for liberal tastes for a few years. Dangerous little things, anthems, once they start to become extroverted.

I could live with these changes.

Yep, sounds good to me. Easy solution that pretty much everyone should be able to get on board with.

By the way, I had my own little incident with the national anthem on Friday night – trying to get to our seats way up on the top of level 4 before the opening bounce, I actually got stopped by the MCG security guard on the way who insisted that I had to stand for the National Anthem. FMD, is that a requirement now? I strongly doubt it.

I followed his orders and waited, but made a sarcastic comment to Lola about patriotism just loud enough for him to hear. I have no issue with those who choose to stand for the anthem out of respect, but I strongly dislike being obliged to do so against my will.

Considering the poll results I'd say you're wrong.

Big sample size, that one. Wink

(But even if it were statistically meaningful, I think it's fair to presume that at least some of the people who voted 'no' interpreted 'changing' the anthem to mean replacing the current one with an entirely new song – indeed, that was the precise context in which I started this thread!)
