Collingwood over run by Carlton: Match Review - Johnson#26

Collingwood over run by Carlton
In a match that promised so much for Collingwood fans delivered little, when the Pies were overrun by the old enemy in the last quarter by 9 points. After Leon Davis put through his 4th goal for the day, the Magpies lead by 27 points, but led by Brendan Fevola and young gun Justin Davies, the Blues kicked 5 last quarter goals to go through to their 2nd victory for the season.

In the 1st quarter, in a scrappy contest, Collingwood gained the upper hand when leading by 11 points at the quarter time brake. Shane Woewodin and Matthew Lokan dominated early, while Mark McGough left the field after 20 seconds when a Camporearle knee to the back of the head released a nasty gash, and leaving him off for the rest of the term. Woewodin, Lokan and Buckley on his left boot from 50 metres out were the Maggies goal kickers.

In the 2nd quarter, the Blues gained the momentum and at 1 stage, the lead which would have been more if not for scrappy kicking for goal. Fevola again led the charge as did Ian Prendergast in the ruck. Tragedy struck for Collingwood early in the quarter when skipper Nathan Buckley left the field with a hamstring tear. It was later revealed that he would again miss another 4 weeks. However, Collingwood climbed back to the lead with a minute to go when Leon Davis snapped his 1st of 4 goals for the day. Brodie Holland and Scott Campoearle have had a history against each other in recent times, including last year when Camporearle allegedly broke Holland’s nose in round 17. This year, another fight broke out between the 2 bitter rivals with 15 player charged with melee involvement.

In the 3rd quarter, the Magpies consolidated their lead, with Leon Davis and Shane Woewodin leading the way. Goals to Kinnear and Tarrant gave the Pies a 20 point lead at 3 quarter time.

The 4th quarter started well again for Collingwood, with a goal to Leon Davis. At this stage, things were going swimmingly for the Pies, leading by 27 points. But then things changed. Justin Davies kicked 3 in quick succession and Brendan Fevola lifted to put the Blues into the lead. When the siren sounded, the Blues were victories, Pies with much soul searching to do.

Player Review:

Leon Davis: 7/10 – Lit up the team all day. Has been very good in his 4 matches so far.

Shane Woewodin: 8/10 – Got back to form with many touches around the ground. Still has a worry when it comes to the crunch.

Ryan Lonie: 4.5/10 – Looked good early and then trailed off.

Alan Didak: Couldn’t exert an influence. Needs to be more consistent.

Nathan Buckley: 2/10 – Good until did his hamstring early in the second. Big loss.

Brodie Holland: 5/10 – An average match. Nothing special and blotted his copy book with a kick the Camporearle’s head.

James Clement: 6/10 – The usual solid performance.

Shane O’Bree: 4/10 – Quiet after last weeks top effort.

Richard Cole: 3/10 – Can’t seem to exert an influence on the contest. Under pressure.

Shane Wakelin: 5/10 – Not great, but not awful. See Clement.

Paul Licuria: 5/10 – Tried hard but can’t find 2001-2003 form.

Chris Tarrant: 6/10 – Kept presenting and had a good return from injury.

Guy Richards: 6.5/10 – Played his best match in his short career. Kept trying and took 2 great marks.

Anthony Rocca: 4/10 – Tried but couldn’t lift the side when it counted.

Ben Johnson: 6.5/10 – Looked good again and stood up for his team mates in the melee.

Mark McGough: 5/10 – Knocked out early which took away his influence. Still looked ok.

Ben Kinnear: 5/10 – Best match for a while. Kept presenting and provided an option.

Matthew Lokan: 3/10 – Good early and then quiet.

David King: 0/10 – Didn’t see him all day. Not his fault with a lack of game time.

Jason Cloke: 6/10 – Did well and showed his passion for the club. Tried hard on Fevola.

Dane Swan: 7.5/10 – Did the job yet again. Cool and calm in defence.
