Collingwood vs Richmond: Match Review - Johnson#26

After leading at three quarter time by four goals, Collingwood almost managed to allow the Tigers an amazing victory but, with the help of a David King goal, managed to bring home the bacon, to the turn of five points. The win was the Magpies seventh for the season, leaving the club in eleventh position. The win was special, as Collingwood donned their heritage jumper, which was a model of what they wore in their premiership season of 1953.

The first ten minutes of the first quarter were dominated by Richmond, as they slammed on the first three goals before the Magpies got into gear. Kane Johnson and David Rodan were constant threats, with Joel Bowden sweeping up time and time again in defence. But fifteen minutes in to the quarter, the much maligned Shane O’Bree charged at a hospital ball to mark and goal on the run to put the Pies first major on the board. Tristan Walker and Nathan Buckley also joined in the goal scoring, with Buckley’s goal a beauty from a tight angle. Young David King, who was to become the hero later in the day, marked and goaled, giving the Pies a slender quarter time lead.

The second quarter saw a topsy-turvy contest, with both sides going goal for goal. Shane Woewodin and Ben Johnson both goaled from tight angles, along with Matthew Lokan, who returned to form, helped to push the lead out to three goals. But Richmond was never far out of the contest. With Ty Zantuck damaging with four goals on James Clement, who lowered his colours for the first time for many weeks and the enigmatic Matthew Richardson a constant threat on Jason Cloke, despite only scoring two goals six with one out of bounds on the full, keeping the Tigers in the contest. For Collingwood, Nathan Buckley, Ben Johnson and Richard Cole kept the Pies strong around the packs all quarter, holding the Tigers at bay.

The third quarter started with a bang for the Magpies, with Ryan Lonie slid a major through the middle from a tight angle on the run. Lokan and Holland also converted for the Pies as they often looked like running away with the contest. But Richmond fought back with the help of Zantuck and Adam Houlahan, who began to look dangerous up forward. Collingwood ran out to a four goal lead at three quarter time, with many a Magpie supporter believing that they were out of the woods. The fourth quarter almost proved them wrong.

The Tigers zoomed out of the blocks in the final quarter, desperate to show some fight for their departing coach Danny Frawley. They banged on four quick goals, to momentarily out them in the lead. It wasn’t as if the Magpies didn’t have their chances. Time and time again, the ball was rushed forward for Pies scoring shots, only to see the umpire showing one finger. A Ty Zantuck goal put the Tigers in front with only minutes to play, and a match that looked like the Pies had won, could have been lost. But it wasn’t to be. From a ball up, Tarkyn Lockyer threw himself at a loose ball, knocking it on to O’Bree who passed to Holland whose clever handball set up David King for his second goal – the match winner. The Pies managed to hold on, to win by five points, with the Tigers set to go into attack as the siren sounded.

Player Review:

Leon Davis: 5.5/10 – Showed an ability to work hard and win his own ball. Much improved player.

Shane Woewodin: 7/10 – Good all day as he was a constant ball magnet.

Ryan Lonie: 6.5/10 – Good all day up forward. Is beginning to show some real talent and scored two great goals.

Nathan Buckley: 6.5/10 – Good all day, but didn’t win the ball as usual. Solid day out and can only get better.

Brodie Holland: 7/10 – Very good in the midfield. In great form and is much underrated.

James Clement: 6/10 – Quiet day compared to his usual standards and may have hit a flat spot.

Shane O’Bree: 6/10 – Is he on the improve? He certainly showed some good form, mixed in with a nice goal at the start.

Steven McKee: 3 /10 – Quiet all day. Could make room for Crow.

Richard Cole: 7/10 – Exciting dashes from defence coupled with some courageous marks completing a good day out. The crowd is now becoming accustomed to his pace and flair from defence.

Scott Burns: 5/10 – Very quiet day for Burnsy. Didn’t have his usual impact.

Paul Licuria: 5/10 – Gave his all as always but seemed to struggle. Always a ball magnet.

Rhyce Shaw: 4.5/10 – Tried hard but made many mistakes by foot – which is a concern.

Tarkyn Lockyer: 7/10 – One of his best games since his return to footy. He was skilled and composed and won the ball well.

Josh Fraser: 6/10 – OK afternoon. Noting special but solid.

Ben Johnson: 7/10 – One of the best. His run hurt Richmond and was one player along with Cole who was prepared to back himself.

Matthew Lokan: 5/10 – Made a few handy contributions. Scored two goals and may have secured his senior spot.

Luke Shackleton: 3/10 – Not on for long but when he was he wetted the Magpies appetites with his endeavour and grunt. Also showed quick hands. Should be pleased with his efforts.

David King: 4.5/10 – Best match in the Black and White. Presented well and has a real goal sense with his last goal being an absolute pearler.

Jason Cloke: 3/10 – Very quiet in defence. Whispers that he was injured may be the reason for his quiet day. Too slow on Richardson

Tristan Walker: 3/10 – Quiet day. Seemed to struggle under the pressure and need to add consistency.

Julian Rowe: 1/10 – Hardly sighted.

Nick Maxwell: 5/10 – Good match. He ran well and showed good hands.
