Collingwood vs Hawthorn: Match Review - Johnson#26

Needing a win to revitalise their season, Collingwood smashed the hapless Hawks to the tune of 65 points. From the first minute of the game, Collingwood had all the momentum and dominated all day. With Fraser and Buckley firing, the Hawks were never any match for the ruthless Pies.

In the first term Collingwood flew out of the blocks, with goals to Rocca, McKee, Tarrant and Didak. From the first bounce, the Pies were obviously reved up with Buckley, Jason Cloke and Rocca firing. Cloke was placed on the wing against Hawk big man Trent Croad and excelled in the new role. After the Hawks scored two quick ones with Thompson leading the way, the Pies fought back to take a healthy lead to the quarter time huddle.

In the second quarter, the Pies continued their dominace. Only inaccurate scoring prevented Collingwood from having a fifty plus point lead at half time. In his best match since his return to senior football, Tarkyn Lockyer scored two goals, following some good work from Fraser. James Clement and Simon Prestigiacomo marshelled the defence as they repelled any Hawks attacking move. The move of forward pockets Leon Davis and Alan Didak were telling, with both players relishing the responcibillity that came with the role. Both had 39 possessions between them as thye crushed the Hawks.

The third quarter brought more pain for Hawthorn with six goals to the Pies, with only two to the Hawks. Lockyer, Didak, Rocca, Jason Cloke and Tarrant were the goal scorers as Licuria and Buckley led the midfield. The Hawks showed no resistance at all, as the Pies spead to a 57 point lead at three quarter time.

In the forth quarter the Pies toyed with the Hawks, although they let them escape for four goals, with Beaumont and Thompson the only leading Hawk lights. Two goals to Buckley and singles to Tarrant, Fraser and Didak gave the Pies a 65 point win. Josh Fraser starred in his 100th game against Peter Everitt, the league's in form ruckman. Brodie Holland, also playing his 100th game, was domminat at ground level with 21 possessions. With a crucial game coming next week against Geelong, Collingwood can't afford to drop another game, with will see them out of finals contension.

Player Review:

Leon Davis: 6.5/10 - When moved into the middle, Davis starred with 16 possessions. Added spark all day.

Shane Woewodin: 6/10 - Quietest game for a few weks but still won his share of the ball.

Ryan Lonie: 5/10 - Quiet but effective match. Provided run.

Alan Didak: 7.5/10 - Very good game. His form has fluctuated all season but hit a rich vien of form on Saturday. Added bite to the midfield and scored four goals.

Nathan Buckley: 7/10 - Mr Class. Stood out with his skill, leadership and nous. Could prove to be one of the games best forwards.

Brodie Holland: 6/10 - 100th game and played well. Continues his good season.

James Clement: 8/10 - Continues his terrific form in defence and is a key reason for our midseason revival. Heading for All Australian honours.

Shane O'Bree: 4.5/10 - Quiet early before ten possessions in the last term.

Steven McKee: 3/10 - Only one kick - a goal - but still impressed around the ground when on.

Richard Cole: 5.5/10 - Consistant performance all day. Now a perminat fixture in defence.

Shane Wakelin: 6/10 - Played his role well and quelled the dangerous Thompson.

Scott Burns: 5.5/10 - Quiet compared to recent weeks but still played his part. Along with Buckley is slowly becoming a half forward.

Paul Licuria: 8/10 - 22 touches says it all. Played well from start to finish and accumulated eight touches in the third quarter. In contension for his third Copeland.

Chris Tarrant: 5.5/10 - Not at his best but still effective. Would be pleased with his return.

Anthony Rocca: 6/10 - Sparked the side early with early goals. Provided a contest and proved that he is one of the most influencial forwards on his day.

Tarkyn Lockyer: 7/10 - He may have only won the ball 13 times but was instrumental in the victory. Three goals underlines his class and value to the side.

Josh Fraser: 9/10 - Best on the ground. Celebrated his 100th in style with 21 possessions, two goals and 29 hitouts. Great game.

Ben Johnson: 5/10 - Continued his slow midseason patch with only 14 touches. Is he carrying an injury?

Jason Cloke: 7/10 - Showed great form on the wing, showing strength, courage and strong hands as he destroyed Croad.

Simon Prestigiacomo: 5/10 - Did his job once again in defence. Suggestions to trade him are crazy.

Dane Swan: 2.5/10 - Quiet game, although he had eight touches in the last quarter.

Julian Rowe: 4.5/10 - Good debut. Showed class and skill. Adds pace to the midfield but came of late with a hamstring injury.
