Nick's vs LSD: Game Review - Dale61

The game was played in excellent spirit in front of a crowd of almost a dozen, but the bitter wind blowing from the Sherrin Stand end ensured those diehards would witness a titanic struggle.

LSD started from where they left off last time, but Nicks weren't going to allow them any easy possessions and were soon peppering the Yarra Falls goals. Several close misses prevented Nicks from opening an early lead, but LSD soon found the gap between the BIG sticks after several misses from 'Greedy' Victory Park, who once again left his kicking boots at home. The height advantage soon proved significant as LSD booted another goal soon after whilst Nicks were trying to find suitable match ups. The first quarter came to an end with LSD taking in a 13-point lead. However, their 2-9 had nothing to do with them kicking into the wind (Yes, VP was again playing as the key forward – LOL).
Strong in defence was CreedyMagpie, who took a couple of strong marks deep in defence before moving up forward in the second half and kicking three goals.

Nicks were still struggling to find match-ups for the likes of MagpiesNest, Victory Park and Magic35 in the LSD forward line, but a tactic of allowing VP to take the shots at goal was keeping Nicks in the game at the early stages. Ben was holding Fatui Ataata in the ruck contests, but Fatui was more dominant at ground level. However, once their sights had been reset, LSD went on to kick six goals for the quarter whilst allowing Nicks a solitary six pointer. The half time lead was a match winning 46 points.

A complete overhaul saw Nicks come out on fire in the third, slowly but surely pegging back the lead with some slick handballs along the R.T. Rush Stand wing, but letting themselves down with some unselfish football in front of goals. Rather than take the shot, everyone wanted someone else to claim the glory and the resultant handballs would eventuate in a turnover. However, three goals was a good result at the mid way point of the quarter. LSD took stock and tightened in defence (if you call putting 14 players in defence as tightening up – LOL), with this tactic soon paying off and all Nicks' hardwork was soon a memory as LSD piled on three late goals, but Nicks did win the quarter by a point.

The Nicks younger players were still giving plenty of drive, but the heavy track soon took it's toll and the heavier bodies of LSD saw another five goals, but Nicks didn't give up as four goals of their own kept some decency to the final scoreline.

In the end, shots at goal proved to be the difference, even if a lot were inaccurate, as a final score of 17-16-118 was too good for the accuracy of Nicks' 10-3-63. A 55-point deficit wasn't all that bad considering, but with some wise 'recruiting' and a better knowledge of our players, the result will be closer, if not in favour of Nicks, the next time around.

It was a great sight to see some of the female members out having a run. In a what may seem too many as a shock decision, Mandy (Victory Park's partner) was voted as the best player on the ground. Other award winners were Magpie Dan for best uniform and MagpiesNest for goal of the day, but I missed who got the mark of the day. Several good marks were taken on the day, even if they were flukes, so someone will have to let the rest of us know.

To end the day, Bartros received The Daicos Cup as captain of the victorious Lulie Street Dashers.
