After a slow start to his AFL career, where he suffered multiple illnesses, the man dubbed 'Presti's career really took off in 1998 when he made his position in the side almost permanent. Prestigiacomo scored two goals against West Coast in round 17 before another good showing against the Bulldogs.
Season 1999 was a break through year for Prestigiacomo, who played the majority of the season at full back and beat some of the competitions best forwards. Under new coach Mick Malthouse, Prestigiacomo established his place in the side as a defender, as the dour defender defeated names such as Lloyd, Richardson and Lynch.
In season 2001, Prestigiacomo kicked on, playing a quiet yet effective brand of football. Even though he rarely was a high possession winner, Prestigiacomo's opponents rarely got a look in. During Collingwood's renaissance year of 2002, Prestigiacomo was a quiet
star, as he enjoyed one of his best seasons.
On Grand Final day, Prestigiacomo defeated Lion Jonathon Brown to be one of the Pies best in the loss.
2003 was a bad year for Prestigiacomo, whose season was marred by injuries, including a punctured lung suffered against the Kangaroos. Once again, Prestigiacomo blanketed Brown on Grand Final day but could not stop the rampant Lions from going three in a row. 2004 saw Prestigiacomo again hampered by injury. With his worst being shin soreness, seeing him missing a month of football.
