Drafted at pick 43 in the 2001 National Draft, McGough was not expected
to make his debut in 2002, as he was thought to be too young and
too small.
However, McGough was a surprise debutant in round 4 against Hawthorn.
McGough made an immediate impression with his quick hands and enthusiasm
for a contest. McGough actually won himself 2 Brownlow Medal votes
for his first match efforts.
Even though McGough had performed well in round 4, no one expected
him to be the best on the ground in the ANZAC Day blockbuster against
Essendon. McGough was
outstanding in the wet as he led his side to victory. He was rewarded
with the ANZAC Medal as the most courageous player on the ground.
McGough continued his good form all season, but lost his spot prior
to the finals. He was named as an emergency for the Grand Final
and was expected to be a late inclusion considering the wet conditions
but it was not to be.
In 2003, McGough dropped his standards with his foot skills and
pace becoming a subject of much debate. He was touted as trade bait
at the seasons end but stayed on with the club.
2004 was a break through season for McGough, who relished all opportunities
that
came his way. His best game came once again on ANZAC Day, where
he was second to James Hird for the best on the ground.
