Has anyone else noticed how Ryan Lonie puts himself under unnecessary pressure by taking a bounce within his first 2 paces after receiving the ball?

It takes away about 1-2 seconds of clear decision making time and ruins 1-2 seconds of players moves up the field. This is a big margin at AFL level as someone like Tarrant could cover 10-20 meters in this time.

It also means opposition players can get that much closer to him and his team mates before he's composed enough to dispose/deliver.

He should run hard for the first 10-15 and then decide if a bounce is necessary. His penetration and accuracy means he should rarely take a bounce at all...unless he's a genuine chance to put it through.

As soon as I saw the title of this thread, I knew what it was about.
It's ben a bug of mine also, watching the tape of the pussies match I thought "why haven't the coaches eliminated this yet"
Seems I'm not the only one.

This may have cost us a 9-pointer in the 2nd quarter on Saturday. I could not believe he took a bounce when a Crow was right on his hammer. Put himself under more pressure than was necessary and consequently stuffed the kick. However, in saying this, players will often take an early bounce to balance themselves, regardless if it is necesary or not. I have played for many years now and sometimes that early bounce just feels right. It almost feels unnatural to run with the ball sometimes without taking a bounce. But I do understand the dilemma it places on leading forwards when the ball-carrier's head is down unnecessarily.

some players do it instinctively to gain speed and put a gap on opponents - peter matera was a perfect example. problem is lonie isnt anywhere near that speed so it doesnt really work to his advantage. wouldnt want to try and rid him of his positive, attacking nature though.
