^ Well, the selection of SPD BradSmith marks the end of the series for NZ.

New Zealand (completely unsuprisingly to those of us who follow cricket) has never won a Test when BradSmith is in the opposition. They haven't even drawn a Test when BradSmith is in the opposition for over 8 years.

Those of you who like to bet on outcomes with big odds might like to note that New Zealand last won a Test against Australia in 2011 (and even then, hung on to win by just 7 runs). Before that, their previous victory over Australia was over 30 years and 31 Tests ago. So, in short, New Zealand has won just 1 of its last 30 Tests, going back over 30 years, against Australia.

It does make you wonder why Australia doesn't play more Test cricket against the Netherlands, Kenya and Zimbabwe. Shocked

Just an update:

1. NZ has still never won a Test when BadSmith is in the opposition.

2. NZ still hasn't won a Test against Australia since 2011.

3. NZ has now extended its splendid record to 1 win in the last 32 Tests against Australia.

It did look for a while like today might be the day - but, alas, the NZ bowling on a flat deck looked about as useful as their batting. Imagine letting a team escape from 5/80 in the 4th innings of any Test match and letting them reach 7/281.

2/201. Laughing

Bring on Kenya, Zimbabwe and Nepal for some competitive Tests, I reckon.

"Alex Carey's player of the match award in Australia's thrilling three-wicket win over New Zealand was thoroughly deserved given his starring role with keeping gloves and then bat as he anchored his team's hefty run chase, but it underscored a deeper truth.

The triumph at Hagley Oval, where Carey and skipper Pat Cummins carried the team to their 279-run victory target with a breezy eighth-wicket stand of 61 from 64 balls, ensured Australia ended their seven-match Test summer with six wins.

And in the five of those games the player of the match gong has gone to an Australia player, all five have been picked up by different individuals.

In the first Test of the season in Perth it was Mitchell Marsh, then Cummins at the MCG as Australia secured a series win against Pakistan, Travis Head in the opening match against West Indies on his home patch, then Cameron Green and Carey in NZ."

CA.

Jezza, in fairness, NZ hardly ever plays Oz.

Unlike England. So many bloody Tests Oz v. England. Okay when both are good. But Oz & England have both been "good"(ish) only one Ashes series in the past 40+ years.

M. Conn's player ratings:

Carey 9
'Despite a lean trot with the bat, Carey played with flare and enterprise in the second innings, guiding Australia to victory with an unbeaten 98 in what may be a career-defining knock. He also claimed 10 catches to equal Adam Gilchrist’s Australian record, although he dropped one diving in front of first slip.'
Cummins 8
Hazlewood 8
Marny 8
Marsh 7
Lyon 6
Starc 6
Khawaja 4
Head 4
Green 4
FTB Smith 2
'The opening experiment continues to come undone, with the Steve Smith shuffle across the crease leaving him vulnerable to the new ball ducking back and hitting him on the pads in front of the stumps.'

4. NZ still hasn't won a home test against Australia since 1993.

And:

5. That ended NZ's run of 13 consecutive Test series (against teams other than Australia, obviously) at home without defeat (10 series wins and 3 series draws since 2017).

6. NZ have a new record for their most consecutive home defeats by another Test team. Australia's routine thrashing of NZ sees the record stand at 7 losses in a row in New Zealand to Australia.

7. NZ now holds, along with Zimbabwe, the dubious joint-record for most consecutive Test losses at home since 1900. (South Africa did lose their first 8 Tests at home to Engalnd between 1889 and 1899).

8. NZ are now 1 win and 15 losses when Australia is chasing a Test victory against them with the bat in the fourth innings.

Some knock, alright - second-highest all-time by a wicketkeeper in a successful fourth-innings chase in a Test (behind only Gilly's 149 against Pakistan in 1999).

True - but it would just have been flaunting it needlessly to send out Lyon to knock off the winning runs. After all, as it was he finished with a better batting average in the series than Williamson. Just imagine what might have been if the GOAT had been allowed to bat on that shamefully flat day 4 track.
