Its up to the Millane Family IMO. Leave it at that for now. Pain, believe it or not, is still fresh for me. Raging Bull wouldve been a future Captain and im sure we would have had more silverware in the cupboard. _________________ Enjoy yourself. Its later than you think! |

Maynard yes but wait till he wins a premiership medal then we can add a 2 onto his back of his jersey.
Like how he is 4 in 2023 and this means just a 2 added on.
Well he half way there.
A premiership medal is its an added 2
Maynard 42 only after hes won the premiership medal. |

Maynard will not want to wear the number 42. Not ever. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

I think youre missing the very important point, well several maybe.
What makes you think Maynard would want a new number. Maynard knowing Pants’ history and meaning to the Club.
But most importantly in my mind, is the Legacy and promise to the Club. The honour and tribute bestowed to the “Millane” Family. This must be foremost the greatest consideration, even before thinking about passing on this fallen warriors number. Still waaaay too raw for me. _________________ Enjoy yourself. Silly idea from the start.
Would there be any numbers left after any of the wars our players fought and died in were used in this way ? _________________ Donny.

Given 35 is now with Nick Daicos instead of rotating through the first draft picks each year; I'd like to see 42 replace 35 for the highest rated draftee. A good fit because that's what Darren Millane was in 1984 by a country mile. Now might be time to make the move but the decision quite rightly ultimately needs the Millane family's blessing. Wouldn't it be good to have to look for another number to assign to the first draft pick each year after the current agreement is honoured to see a Millane family member claim 42 in the future, just like Nick did with 35 this year? _________________ woodsmen rule |

Jumper numbers are a big deal.
42 is a big deal. Dont go handing it out willy nilly. Ask Oli Henry how important the #35 was to him at Collingwood?
I would hate to see it go to a new player every year.
Zai Millane is playing up in Queensland and is under the Gold Coast Suns Academy for the 2024 draft. I'm not sure how good he has been playing, but for me, the ultimate way to bring back this number would be seeing Zai wearing it. If he is good enough to be drafted, we must work something out with the Suns/AFL to make sure he becomes a Collingwood player. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |

good to hear about Zai and we agree, if he makes the grade then offer him the 42. where we differ is we would not be handing it out willy nilly. It would be' (as was.35) given to our most highly rated junior coming in to the club. Here you are son take this jumper. a boy of your status had it back in the day and look at what he did. wear it with pride and draw on this for inspiration. it is yours for the year . make the most of this chance then we move on from there. the hope is that one day someone will do a Nick Daicos and keep it after year one but otherwise we would see renewed energy in the club with Darren's 42 on field. _________________ woodsmen rule |

Exactly, their are Collingwood footballers whose sacrifice was greater than being drunk and dying. We need to move on from a good bloke, who whilst considered a legend on the field by many, was really just a selfish bastard, whose actions could have killed others, and by very blind luck only killed himself.

yes btp it was a fatally bad decision by DM but how dare you call him selfish!
Check out the pages of tributes thousands of people posted after his death if you need to get a sense of what he meant to us then and to this day. Anything but selfish was our Darren.
Have you ever made a bad call yourself? I know I have. There but the
grace of God/fate go us. We are all human and making mistakes comes with living life. Hopefully we live and learn but not always.
Your reference to the club choosing whether or not to retire numbers in years gone by is spurious Back in the day they gave numbers based on a player's surname's place in the alphabetical list. This following the jumper first creed. As far as I know Darren Millane 42 is the first to be retired in the history of the CFC. I would love to see it on the back of one of our best boys again. _________________ woodsmen rule |

Dont rotate the jumper. It just brings up unwanted pressure on the one who wears it. The socials will light up and we'll hear all about how we as a club are teaching out kids the wrong thing by honoring someone that died while driving drunk.
The players couldnt give a fk about it. How many who wore 35 between Presti and Nick really felt honored in wearing it? How many really wanted to keep on wearing it? Ho many league appearances did it make?
I think this thread alone shows enough angst over the issue. Either bring it back into rotation, or leave it as it is. But do not do what we did with 35 and hand it our every season. _________________ A Goal Saved Is 2 Goals Earned! |
