Jamie Elliott kicked 10 goals in 11 weeks but after 3 weeks off has kicked 11 in 3 weeks seemingly benefiting from the time out to rest lingering hip and leg soreness. jack Gunston's 6 goal result after a similar rest albeit against the West Coast Eagles further emphasizes this approach has its merits.

With a 14 and 2 ledger at the time of posting, I hope the Pies look at "managing" our player workloads in July and August so we don't limp into September. Happy they're not rushing Mihocek and if in doubt, Maynard needs protecting from himself given the competitor he is.

Hate to see a Clayton Oliver type attitude to recovery within our ranks. It's been noted that Tom Mitchell has played sore for over a month now so don't be surprised to see him and others like Darcy Moore given a week off here and there.

Thoughts??

Not many players are playing injury free at this time of year, to be honest. Titch won’t miss a game. We gave Billy a rest, but I don’t think we will for anyone else unless there’s a chance they might turn a niggle into an injury. Maynard could have played through the pain, but another week off ensures he’ll be cherry ripe for finals.

And totally different situation with Oliver Wink

Yes that makes sense. I’m certain that if it was a GF, Bruz would have played.

I think Geelong showed the benefits of "managing" players in the build-up to last years finals campaign, so I'm all for taking advantage once having secured a top two position to rest any players who are physically or mentally drained so that they are cherry ripe for September action. I know that Melbourne's finals campaign last year was severely hampered with one of their players admitting that half their team was physically "shot" by the time September arrived with niggles and sore bodies not allowing them to bring their best to their finals games.

This week is a great opportunity to "rest" a couple of potentially sore players from the Collingwood team with regulars such as Maynard, Sidebottom and Mihocek to come back into the team. If Tom Mitchell is suffering from a sore neck that will benefit from a rest then why not give him off this week and get him in top physical shape for the challenge of taking on Port Adelaide in Adelaide the next week?
Fin Macrae is beating the door down to get a chance to do the job that Mitchell is currently doing so why not take the opportunity to give Fin Macrae a run at AFL level against a team we should easily account for in Fremantle?
I think Sidebottom should be picked as a starter for the Fremantle game with Markov the sub being available to replace Sidebottom at 3/4 time if the opportunity arises to provide the ideal return to the game after a few weeks out of the game.

Suspect we're already seeing it, without it being stated as 'managed'.
Every year players carry injuries, and we only find out in the bylines of interviews, or during the off-season that it was the case or to the extent of the injury. An example was Tom Mitchell.
Craig McRae was forced to admit Mitchell was under an injury cloud post Round 1 - albeit a small one - when a reporter quizzed him about it.
“I understand Tom Mitchell has been carrying a bit of a back injury. Is that any concern?” the reporter asked.
“How did you know that? That’s good mail,” a surprised McRae responded through a big grin.

If we were say 9th and needed to win a clutch of games, might we have seen Maynard, Mihocek, Elliott or others play through injury? All three were labouring during the year until such time as the Jarrod Wade on assesing advice from the medical advisors ruled them out.
The more defined injuries of Howe, Lipinski, Krueger, McStay, Sidebottom have required much more structured recovery programs.

Our list depth offers the luxury of allowing players to fully recover before resuming.
Jarrod Wade and his impact on this team may yet have his own chapter written in the Collingwood annuls.

Obviously all competing 8 teams get a weeks rest prior to the finals commencing, however if Tom needs a week off in the interim, then the most practical game for him to miss would be the Hawks game coming up shortly...

I love tuning into Jarrod Wades injury update.

They are bruttally honest and to the point.

They are refreshingly honest as well.

Top work Jarrod.

He makes everything so clear and easy as well.

Big shout out to Jarrod mate you are doing a great job keep it up.

Who else thinks we have a good one in Jarrod at Collingwood.

Howe's injury recovery needs management also. Coming back in from such an injury will not be easy. He looked like he was playing sore most of the game against the Western Bulldogs.

“Managed” might be the explanation given for a former Pies omission this week.

Some ‘brutal’ work ahead: Brownlow medallist explains Collingwood’s handling of Mitchell

Former champion Cat Jimmy Bartel believes fellow Brownlow medallist Tom Mitchell was a “victim of circumstance” when he was subbed out on Saturday night and still has a big finals role to play.

The Collingwood midfielder, the club’s star off-season recruit, started the round 18 clash with Fremantle as the club’s substitute before the Pies sacrificed his ball-winning talents on the weekend against Port Adelaide in search of more run.

Mitchell’s consecutive weeks of limited game time raised eyebrows, but 3AW football expert Bartel said Collingwood’s luxurious ladder position gave them the chance to manage their older players down the stretch.

That opinion is in line with Magpies coach Craig McRae’s explanation after their win over the Dockers, when he said it was his way of looking after the 30-year-old, who has barely missed a training session.

“If you look at their age profile, Mitchell is towards the senior end of it, and they’re so far in front in first place that they can start doing things like this,” Bartel told The Age.

“It happened at Geelong [in Bartel’s playing days] – we were one of the first to create it in ’09, where we gave a game or quarter rest to the senior boys because we were flying.

“They’re not as worried about Daicos, Quaynor or the other young guys because they’ll bounce and rebound into the next week. When it really boils down to it, Mitchell and Taylor Adams will have to do some pretty brutal work when it comes to finals, so you want to look after them.”

McRae and his fellow coaches’ decision to insert dasher Oleg Markov into the contest at Mitchell’s expense followed a discussion between them about instead sacrificing one of the ruckmen, Darcy Cameron or Mason Cox.

Jimmy Bartel sees some similarities between this year’s Collingwood group, and the Cats of 2009.

“We sort of thought, ‘Do we give a little bit around clearance, and try and get the ball on the outside?’, then we ummed and ahhed about rucks,” McRae said.

“There are lineball decisions on this – [Mitchell]’s really important to us. I hope he doesn’t feel like he’s anything other.”

Bartel understood the logic in keeping both ruckmen in the game, given Cameron was returning from injury and Cox typically did not spend extended stints in the ruck.

Jordan De Goey’s return from suspension in the past three weeks has coincided with Mitchell’s situation, including McRae’s new preference for De Goey, Nick Daicos and Scott Pendlebury as his centre-bounce combination.

Even in Mitchell’s full game in round 17, he was a distant fourth in centre attendances (13) to Daicos (24), De Goey (23) and Pendlebury (21). Jack Crisp was not part of the centre-bounce rotation in two of the past three matches, while Adams saw a boost in opportunities the past fortnight.

“A move like that might open up the forward line, and make it really dangerous – and they could keep ‘spitting’ one [of the midfielders] forward [to change who attends stoppages],” Bartel said.

“It will be interesting to see whether Mitchell and Adams have a role if Daicos is heavily sat on.”

Mitchell had to swallow his pride in his final season last year at Hawthorn, when then-first-year coach Sam Mitchell regularly removed him from the centre square to give younger players an opportunity.

After two years of trade rumours, the Hawks shipped both him and Jaeger O’Meara off, to Collingwood and Fremantle, respectively, in the final half hour of the 2022 trade period.

It was a match made in heaven because the Pies needed, and wanted, to improve the contested part of their game despite a successful run to a preliminary final.

Collingwood have turned that weakness into a strength this year, and Mitchell has received a good portion of the credit, amassing 40 more contested possessions than any other Magpie.

He has always done his best work in the contest, where he is a master at manipulating space and winning the Sherrin.

However, Mitchell’s early weekend exit owed to McRae bemoaning the Power repeatedly out-running and out-numbering his players between stoppages.

Thanks Laurie. It’s a good read and I think what needs to be added into the Mitchell conversation is that amongst everything else, his main competitor for the “ extractor “ role is in very good recent form. Adams last two weeks would have given the club confidence that nothing is lost when he takes over the Mitchell role. I thought Adams ball handling in the wet against Port was very good ( by Adams standards ) especially when others struggled. He looks on top of his game right now and maybe he’s been managed behind the scenes while Mitchell did more heavy lifting.
It’s an easy decision to manage players when you’re on top of the ladder but it’s also an easier decision when you know there’s an in form replacement who can pick up the slack of the player who has been “ managed “. While you only need one of them in the square at any given time, it’s important that when it really matters, one of them at least is at the top of their game.

Nick Daicos 100% should be managed and rested this week.

As for Cox, if he got the Curnow treatment from the green maggots he’d have kicked 10, but he also provides a valuable presence up forward and allowed others to take easy marks.
