Post subject: Collingwood list rankedReply with quote

I thought I'd rank our entire playing list in order based on current observed form and what the side needs right now (i.e. not future potential or past accomplishments). I’ve included players with long-term injuries for the sake of completion. Would be interested in hearing others’ thoughts and who you’d rank differently:

Group 1
(Crucial to our success; their absence makes us a considerably weaker team)

1. Jamie Elliott
2. Darcy Moore
3. Jordan De Goey
4. Brayden Maynard
5. Scott Pendlebury
6. Brody Mihocek
7. Brodie Grundy
8. Nick Daicos
9. Josh Daicos
10. Taylor Adams
11. Jeremy Howe

Group 2
(Solid and dependable, generally picked if available)

12. John Noble
13. Jack Crisp
14. Steele Sidebottom
15. Darcy Cameron
16. Nathan Murphy
17. Beau McCreery
18. Isaac Quaynor
19. Jack Ginnivan
20. Ash Johnson
21. Patrick Lipinski
22. Mason Cox
23. Will Hoskin-Elliott

Group 3
(Able to come in and play roles well, handy depth)

24. Oliver Henry
25. Nathan Kreuger
26. Josh Carmichael
27. Trent Bianco
28. Jack Madgen
29. Trey Ruscoe
30. Tyler Brown
31. Finlay Macrae

Group 4
(Could play AFL if we’re desperate)

32. Charlie Dean
33. Reef McInnes
34. Callum Brown
35. Tom Wilson
36. Aiden Begg
37. Will Kelly

Group 5
(Not ready for senior level)

38. Harvey Harrison
39. Isaac Chugg
40. Caleb Poulter
41. Liam McMahon
42. Arlo Draper
43. Cooper Murley

Are they ranked within the groups as well?

I’d have Crisp in the top tier, I think. Damn near Copeland winner.

If I had to demote someone for him, maybe Mihocek or Josh Daicos, but it’s hard.

DeGoey is important, but sadly he has never quite become the Martin/Cripps Petracca-tier player I once hoped.

Yep, everyone's in order by number. It did feel a bit harsh demoting Crisp, but I think he's a little more in the "serviceable" category this year. If he ever missed – if such a thing is conceivable! – I think we could cover his absence in a way that we couldn't with, say, Mihocek or Nick Daicos. And there's certainly no offence intended; I still have him above Cameron and Murphy, for instance, who currently play super important roles in the side.

I've come around on De Goey. I think there are at least a couple of games in the past month that we simply wouldn't have won if he wasn't there – yesterday's match is one, possibly Melbourne too, and I feel we would have gotten a lot closer to Sydney if he'd been there.

Ash Johnson soaring up the charts with a bullet. Working from a small sample admittedly bit for mine he’s one of our most Important right now.

How high would you have him, Damien? I totally agree that he's become a vital cog in the side after just a few games, and reckon you could make a case for him being above one or more of McCreery, Quaynor and Ginnivan, if not others.

Yeah, perhaps could have put him a couple of spots higher (maybe just behind his brother). Very much doubt he'll be on our list next season though, whereas you'd expect everyone from 31 and above to be persisted with.

Interesting criteria. Grundy is rated in the first category yet Cameron and Cox have successfully covered his absence for more than half the season, while Crisp is in the second because he'd be able to be covered.

I think Crisp and Sidey should both be in cat 1. Yes we can cover them if we had to but not that easily. Crisp is basically playing midfield but also able to cover half back, he also won the Copeland last year and hasn't dropped form this year.

I'd almost have IQ ahead of Noble. Not bagging Noble at all but of the two, IQ is harder to cover. He players taller than his height, he's fast without being as quick as noble, better skills and decision making, I think he's become a lock in the team.

Dave, If the criteria for category one is ‘crucial to our success, his absence makes us considerably weaker’ than I’d say he’s cat 1.

He’s a tall, strong marking forward which demands a strong tall opposition defender and he’s a dead eye dick shooting for goal. Right now He’s a potential match winner and more difficult to replace than a midfielder in my humble opinion. Our X-factor.

Crisp is tier 1 for me he is so versatile and I don’t think we can really cover him if he was missing for an extended period, our midfield has enough issues with him there to help out.

FB: Maynard, Frampton, Howe
CHB: Quaynor, Moore, Noble
Centre: Josh Daicos, Pendles, Sidebottom
CHF: Hill, McStay, McCreery
FF: Elliott, Checkers, Ginnivan
FOL: Cameron, Nick Daicos, JDG*

IC: Cox, Mitchell, Adams, Crisp

Sub: Krueger

Emerg: Johnson, Carmichael, Lipinski.

Bloody tough... assuming:
JDG stays.
Grundy and Henry go.
We get everyone we target.

McRreery / Hill might not work in one team and Fwd line might be too small so one goes out for Krueger / Johnson.

Midfield has so very many to go through it, Lipinski stiff.

Seems to me we have lots of depth across every line. Actually seems very balanced for mine.

Wow am I being positive.. sorry, ahhh, sack the coach.

Post subject: 2023 list - where will we be compared to last year??Reply with quote

So - trade period nearly done. Draft still to come but we don’t really know what that’s going to yield.

Feels like a fair bit of lost change happening. The main guys we lost didn’t really play in 2022 (Roughy, Grundy) and we haven’t lost Henry yet…

Some interesting ins in McStay (tall forward) and Frampton (tall back) - both ticks at least in as far as they appear to be the right size and shape and play in the right spots to address our needs.

Not entirely sure we needed Hill with Ginni, mcReery, Elliott (and Henry) but he can kick goals and I think it will help to make us more potent. He’s pretty young too so will contribute for hopefully a long time.

Let’s not forget we had Dean and Freddy come in last year and barely fire a shot. They should hopefully be like new recruits in the pre-season so add a couple extra fresh faces competing for a spot compared to the team that we picked for finals. McInnes will hopefully be better for another preseason.

Hopefully the cliff doesn’t come too soon for Sidey and Pendlebury…

I won’t die in a ditch if we lose Henry but I reckon he’s more likely to stay than go to the draft if a trade can’t get done. If we can add Mitchell that would probably be icing on the top.

Of course doesn’t mean anything is guaranteed but I think it’s been a productive 2 years of list turnover. Excited for ‘23

If we get Mitchell we’ve actually filled all our holes. Add two 18-19yo tall running defenders or forwards at picks 16 and 27 we will have done really well. We can cover the loss of Henry if he leaves. I prefer players committed to the club than a sook who misses his brother an hour down the road. You can argue that a Mihocek isn’t as good as a Tom Lynch, or a Billy Frampton isn’t as good as a Steve May, but you need to look at the next level down at guys like Charlie Dean, Draper, MaCrae, Copper, McInnes, Begg for that improvement that takes us to the next step.

has anyone seen enough of Arlo Draper, Cooper Murley and Harvey Harrison to suggest that any of them will make it?
