Post subject: Nick Bollettieri, famous tennis coach, has died at age 91Reply with quote

The famous coach who trained Andre Agassi, the Williams sisters and many others, died Monday at the age of 91.
That Florida academy he ran certainly courted plenty of controversy, but he punched out some champions.

https://www.citizen.co.za/sport/nick-bollettieri-famous-tennis-coach-has-died-at-age-91/

In 1980, Sports Illustrated headlined a piece about Bollettieri: “He’ll Make Your Child A Champ, But It Won’t Be Much Fun.”

Bollettieri believed in repetition.

“To change a shot,” he said, “you have to repeat the same shot about 30,000 times in training. That’s the rate, the union minimum.

Post subject: Jim Stewart (record producer) co-founder of Stax RecordsReply with quote

James F. Stewart (July 29, 1930 – December 5, 2022) was an American record producer and executive who in 1957 co-founded Stax Records, one of the leading recording companies during soul and R&B music's heyday.
Stewart was a part-time fiddle player and joined a local country music group, the Canyon Cowboys. He worked days as a banker at Union Planters Bank.
In 1957, Stewart launched his own record label, then called Satellite Records, which issued country music and rockabilly records. The Stax label was founded by Jim Stewart and his sister Estelle Axton (STewart/AXton = Stax) originated as Satellite Records in Memphis in 1957 by Jim Stewart, initially operating in a garage.
In 1958, Stewart's sister Estelle Axton began her financial interest in the company. Taking a considerable financial risk, she mortgaged her family home to invest $2500 (US$23,480 in 2021 dollars) in the company, enabling Satellite to purchase an Ampex 350 mono console tape recorder.

The label also scored many hits on the Billboard Hot 100 pop music chart, and internationally, during this time.
Stax was influential in the creation of Southern soul and Memphis soul music. Stax also released gospel, funk, and blues recordings. Renowned for its output of blues music,

Following the death of Stax's biggest star, Otis Redding, in 1967, and the severance of the label's distribution deal with Atlantic Records in 1968, Stax continued primarily under the supervision of a new co-owner, Al Bell. Over the next five years, Bell expanded the label's operations significantly, in order to compete with Stax's main rival, Motown Records in Detroit. During the mid-1970s, a number of factors, including a problematic distribution deal with CBS Records, caused the label to slide into insolvency, resulting in its forced closure in late 1975.

Stax artists included Sam & Dave, Albert King, Booker T. & the M.G.'s, Otis Redding, The Mar-Keys, Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, Isaac Hayes, Richard Pryor & Bill Cosby, to name but a few.

RudeBoy will be heavy-hearted today.

Terry Hall (19 March 1959 – 18 December 2022) was an English musician and the lead singer of the Specials, and formerly of Fun Boy Three, the Colourfield, Terry, Blair & Anouchka and Vegas.

The Specials
Initially the frontman of 'the Coventry Automatics' in 1977–78, which became the Specials in early 1979, Hall first came to prominence in the UK in 1979 when BBC Radio 1 disc jockey (DJ) John Peel played their debut single "Gangsters" on his show. The band then went on to release their debut studio album, The Specials, which also contained the hits "A Message to You Rudy" and "Too Much Too Young."
In October 1980, the Specials released their second studio album, More Specials, which boasted three more hit singles with "Do Nothing", "Stereotype", and "Rat Race".
The single "Ghost Town", released in June 1981, spent three weeks at number one and ten weeks in the top 40 of the UK Singles Chart.

In the 1960s, the Jamaican diaspora introduced rude boy music and fashion to the United Kingdom, which influenced the mod and skinhead subcultures.

Geezus. many years ago I was having a few Friday lunchtime beers at a pub in the city with some work colleagues. The conversation went to who was the worst/most ungainly kick of a footy ever to play VFL/AFL.

I nominated Barry Round and proceeded to loudly explain why, his shit ball drop, shonky action, in minute detail. As I finished, a mate leaned in and whispered in my ear, "you know he's sitting behind us?"

I laughed, turned around, and there was barry Round sitting 6 feet away staring absolute daggers at me. Embarassed
