Sorry to interrupt the travelogue but does anyone have an opinion on the Varcoe decision? I was a little surprised given his age and durability. Same with Reid. Thought they would both retire. I believe they can still contribute when fit but that hasn’t been too consistent lately. Depth is only useful if it’s available _________________ https://forever.collingwoodfc.com.au/sav-sinks-the-dockers/ |

To have a tilt means depth is required- this is true of Reid for 2020.
Varcoe, at his best form, is more than depth- both will earn their keep in 2020 either by playing a role in the first 18 or in mentoring new players in the VFL.
At the end of 2020, both will probably depart leaving some salary cap space for the Big Four to remain in black and white... _________________ Firm in the belief that number 17 flag is only months away... |

I think it's a decision based on a realistic view by the club that we have one more year left to win a flag with this group of players. Varcoe certainly isn't the player he once was, but If he had been delisted we would not have been able to fill his spot on the list with anyone better than him.
We presumably don't have the salary cap space to replace him with a better player, so we would have been forced to replace him with a fourth round draft pick or a c grader from another club. Neither of whiom would make a better contribution than Varcs towards winning a flag next year.
And, of course, for all we know he may have been playing with an injury niggle all year that affected his performance. He may come out and have a much better season next year. Here's hoping. _________________ Side by side. |

I think a fit Varcoe is a certain starter in the seniors. I’m rapt that they kept him and he will be a tackling machine to keep up the forward pressure acts which cause turnovers and scoring opportunities for us. He will be fired up to impress in most probably his last season. _________________ Don't confuse your current path with your final destination. The one thing management wise is list fitness—-we will have damn near same list of which many were in sick bay never allowing us to get a consistent jelled 22
2018 / 19 was a real feat juggling the good and injured and get within a kick of a flag
We have to really hope the list we settle on is capable of going that extra yard
The Noble,s and Quaynor,s must get AFL savvy very early _________________ I'm not arguing--just explaining why i am right |
