The W.C. squad looks fairly predictable and with only 15 allowed there's little or no room for surprises.
If we assume the present 12 will go (Warne in), we're looking at one spare batsman, one spinner and one all-rounder.
Batsman: Maher looks a shoe-in but others in the hunt are Hussey and Blewett. Roughies ? Justin Langer and Michael Clarke. Aw, OK Kristen, Steve Waugh.
Spinner: Hauritz looked good in South Africa and does have the temperament. MacGilla is a chance if Warney can't make it. Brad Hogg is the roughy.
All-rounder: I have my doubts about Shane Watson in the first XI and would have Ian Harvey in there but he's under an injury cloud so this position is wide open really and we could do worse than Andrew Symonds (brilliant fieldsman, bowls medium pace and off spin and on his day an explosive batsman) or even Blewett.

Steve Waugh has to tour especially if Warne doesnt go.
Who would you take a person who has delivered time in and time out or a guy who may perform once in a blue moon ??
It reminds me of how everyone wrote off Perkins at the Olympics and how people wrote off Mark Taylor
Champions rise to the occassion and make no mistake Steve Waugh is a champion!!!!

I disagree that MacGill can't bowl in the first 15 JLC. Remember his one day debut a couple of years ago. The Australian quicks were hit out of the attack by Adbul Razzaq and MacGill came on and bowled the 12th over. He went on to bowl 7 in that spell, and finished with 4/19 off his 10 overs earning him man of the match.

That may be a fair point that you have. Lets wait and see how MacGill goes. I hope he does prove me wrong and bowls brilliantly if given the opportunity. Very few spin bowlers are good enough to bowl in the first 15 overs of a game.

"Steve Waugh has to tour especially if Warne doesnt go" - JLC
M8, what's that mean ? Suddenly, Steve's a leg spinner ?!! He hasn't bowled seriously for ages and in any case his figures don't stack up too well. He averages almost 36 runs per wicket, strikes once in 7.5 overs, gives away more r.p.o. than Shoaib Akhtar and has never taken more than 3 wickets in a spell !!
So, given those figures, you'd send him as a batsman but as he hasn't much form to recommend him (he was dropped because of lack of runs) AND he'd have to be picked ahead of either, one of the batsmen already in the top 6 or Jimmy Maher and Greg Blewett, who are both in sparkling form.
So, do you reckon he should be reinstated as captain ? That's not going to happen, m8, and to take him just on that basis (leadership/experience/inspiration) would only undermine the present skipper. He has had his day in the one-dayers.

No its about experience and leadership. Steve Waugh has been there and done that and to me has the required skills to do the job.
He wont undermine Pontings leadership, if anything he will add to it. Even though Ponting is captain im sure he listens and gets input from experienced players.
People are too quick to write off champions. Maher, Lehmann, Blewett, Symonds whoever else you can throw up none of these guys will ever get close to being uttered in the same calibre or class as Steve Waugh. If my life depended on it i would rather have Steve Waugh anyday.

It may be up and coming talent but when it comes to World Cup i would go with people who are proven. People are comparing Steve Waugh, Symonds, Watson etc. I find that insulting as Symonds and Watson havnt done anything at International level. Neither Symonds or Watson have proven themselves worthy of a World Cup position.

I totally agree with u JLC. Waugh's experience and calmness underpressure is an invaluable asset to the team. People are forgetting that he single handedly won the World Cup for us. if he is selected as an allrounder he only needs to be able to bowl 5 overs a match. Lehmann, Bevan and Martyn can bowl the other 5 between them. Why do we necessarily need an allrounder that bowls 10 overs.

Agree with CQ. And anyway, JLC, who's comparing Watson and Symonds with Steve Waugh? After all, they DID make the 30 player squad - he didn't.

It's irrelevant anyway as we've now been informed that unless a player was selected in the 30 man squad, they can't be in the WC 15.
Hey, gobbles, do you think Ryan Campbell is a chance? Even as a cover for Gilly (and handy spare batsman).

Good to see that Keith Stackpole thinks Waugh should be in the final 15 man squad. As he stated when its knock out and it comes to the crunch who handles the pressure best? STEVE WAUGH. He also didnt name garbage like Shane Watson in his squad. Instead he selected Ian Harvey a player who can bowl at the death and is great in the field I also agree with the selection of Bracken as he is a left arm bowler and a handy option to have in reserve. I say make Stackpole a selector as he seems to be right on the money in my opinion.
As for Steve Waugh not being in the initial squad the selectors clearly stuffed up in thinking that Waugh is not in the best 30 players going around. That is clearly insulting!!! Lets all count the World Cups that Buchanan and Hohns have won?? Does Hohns know the meaning of playing under pressue?? From what i saw he was just an average player at best.
However one would think that Buchanan the coach having formely coached QLD, Border and Hohns being queenslanders will all be pushing for Jimmy Maher to tour If Australia doesnt come home with the World Cup or at least reach the final then they have failed (unless there are exceptional circumstances like VERY poor umpiring or rain affected games)
Secondly i think the ICC will have to back down and let Australia name Steve Waugh if they so wish. Afterall India is in dispute and hasnt even named a squad. Hardly fair then to punish Australia one would think!!
After watching MaGill bowl i think its safe to say he wont be playing in the World Cup. He is too much of a risk as you cant afford for MaGill to have four or five warm up overs!!! It makes you appreciate Shane Warne even more the way he is spot on from ball one and just the control he has
