How frigging old are you? You have abiding memories of the 1969 first semi? _________________ Every dead body on Mt Everest was once a highly motivated person, so maybe just calm the **** down. |

I never heard him say a bad word about any player, ever. He was an ornament to the game in all capacities. Newman, not so much over the last 40 years.
As for being in the Hall of Fame, it must have more to do with his longevity than anything else. Here's a list of ruckman he played against that were obviously better than him:
Nicholls
Dempsey
Thompson
Moss
Scott
Ditterich
Round
Greene
Balme
Teasdale
Fitzpatrick
Hampshire
Lee
Alexander
There's probably others. Those are just off the top of my head.
My abiding memory of him is the 1969 first semi final against Richmond - watching Mike Greene put it down Bartlett's and Barrott's throats all afternoon - that was the year he was named "all-Australian".
Let's be clear, though, being named "all-Australian" meant that he played for Victoria in an era of team quotas - you couldn't have more than two players from a club picked for Victoria. It isn't like they looked at the season, as they do now, and said it was out of Gawn and Grundy for the all-Australian team. So, nobody in their right mind would have picked Newman to ruck for Victoria if Greene was available - but Bartlett and Hart picked themselves. So, he was picked as second ruck behind Nicholls. God knows why Thompson wasn't in the side ahead of Newman - no-one seriously thought Newman was in Thompson's league - but Terry Waters and Ricky Watt were fabulous players and each were in peak form that year.
I can think of a lot of fine players for Geelong over the years. To me, Newman was just a bloke who played in their team. |
Good post and just about right on all points.
Sam Newman is a misogynist and arrogant turd.
John Newman I understand is a reasonable person. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

One of the things I was quite disappointed in with Sam Newman was that he chickened out of a boxing match with Crackers Keenan a few years ago. I dislike boxing but I definitely would have enjoyed that. _________________ “I even went as far as becoming a Southern Baptist until I realised they didn’t keep ‘em under long enough” Kinky Friedman |

Yes, I do. I remember listening to it on the radio in the afternoon (my mother made us all go to a flower show at Box Hill town hall - I was so angry because I had to go and look at roses during part of the radio broadcast) and then watching the replay, transfixed by how good Richmond were and how bad Geelong were. You have no idea how obsessed I was with footy as a kid.
By the way, I forgot that Peter Moore and Simon Madden played in that era, so there's another two ahead of him.
Look, as far as Newman is concerned, I've never really paid him much attention. I can picture phenomenal Geelong players of that era (Denis Marshall first among them - an actual wizard, though he went back to WA way too early, so he's not widely remembered, then Polly, Billy Goggin, Micky Turner, Doug Wade and Ian Nankervis) - they were my second team when I was a kid (my grandmother had supported them before my mother married into a Collingwood family and supporting another team ceased to be an option). Newman was always in the team but I don't think anyone really would bring him to mind as a "I'd go to the footy to watch him play" sort of player. He was more like solid furniture. Is it informative that he is in the Geelong team of the century but in the back pocket? I don't know - I don't remember him doing anything particularly memorable there, either.
In the period Newman played senior football, the following ruckmen won the Brownlow: Noel Teasdale, Thompson, Dempsey, Moss, Graham Teasdale and Peter Moore. You wouldn't have picked Newman at his peak before any of them - and I've already mentioned a number of others who were tremendously influential players. Looking at his stats, he didn't really set any records for anything. He did get 100 Brownlow votes over his career - but even that only puts him 104th all-time. Just going down the list, Dempsey got 246 votes, Thommo 151, Madden 139, David Cloke 121, Justin Madden (!) 121, Barry Round 116, Peter Moore 108 and Graham Moss 103 (in just 84 games). Many of those players were guys you'd turn the telly on just to watch play. Newman wasn't one of them. |

It's a bit of a reach, yeah, but WTF is Newman on about in that tweet? How does someone get to the age of 74 and still have the mentality of a high school bully?
It really is about time someone auditioned to be the Australian Donald Trump. Could you think of a better fit? _________________ All watched over by machines of loving grace |

I think its quite simple to see what Sam was on about, he simply replied to Lumumbas tweet, saying that Lumumba was never invited on the show! what don't you get? why is that bullying? the loser comment? so he took a childish snipe back at the one he copped.
as for a bit of a reach, what the **** does it mean????? the sexualization of anti blackness? I cant see anything about sex or body parts in Sams tweet! _________________ You cant fix stupid, turns out you cant quarantine it either! |

He told him to stop pulling his dick. Which despite Lumumbas ridiculous rant, is simply something men say to other men who think too highly of themselves. But like everything it’s turned into a racist taunt because it was too a black man...
His response reminds of so many kids who’d act up at school and when they got told off they’d respond “oh miss, you’re only picking on me because I’m black” |
