The greatest to play at Melbourne Park. |
It's interesting how luck plays into all this. The hardcourt they've gone with just suits him really well, much better than the hardcourt at Flushing Meadows (which suited Pat Rafter much better than the old Rebound Ace).
Woodbridge thinks the surface is "slicker" at the US open and "grittier" at the AO. |

Baum:
"Djokovic and Federer competed in absolute silence, the sound of mutual respect. If only Tennis Australia showed the same for the sport and its lovers. Instead, they intrude at every half-break in play. We have come to a time when promoters are louder and more grating than any player. Djokovic’s classy words in the post-match formalities put them to shame in their endless din and blather."
Yup. Music blaring between changes of ends, etc.? It's ridiculous.
Baum:
"When he took a medical time-out en route to beating Nadal in the 2017 Australian Open final, instead of empathising, Pat Cash called it “legal cheating”. To be fair to Cash, Federer is not above a bit of strategic malingering." |

Thiem-Zverev is underway.
Small break to close the roof, as the rain comes.
Wow, that was very quick. It used to take a long time. (It was already partially closed.) |

Zverev took the first set, but Thiem has the break in the second.
-----------------------------
Zverev breaks back for 3-3 in the second set.
They show that his hitting point in rallies is less than a metre behind the baseline. His tournament average is about 1.5m behind the baseline. |

It's 1 set each, as Thiem levels!
This could be a very close match.

The struggle to hold continues in set 3. Many breaks! |

Thiem wins in 4 sets.
He is on a tiebreak roll, winning the last five he's played in.
I reckon he's a chance to beat Djokovic. He's won 4 out of their last 6 meetings. |

That baby thing at the barty press conference was a pr stunt and the baby was used as a deflection of any hard questions asked that's all. Barty knew this too got off lightly I feel it just didn't look professional from barty. |

Sofia Kenin wins the Women's Singles in 3 sets.
------------------------------------
Davenport presents the Trophy. It took me ages to remember her name.
How time flies.
It still feels strange having the TV commentators involved in the tournament itself -- here, Woodbridge doing the talking in the presentation ceremony. This didn't happen in the old days. |

Well done to both Kenin and Mugeruza good game played by good players. Kenin comes across as easy going ditzy blonde girl where garbine is more traditional Spanish type of person. Both great on and off court one of the opens better womens final. |
