Australia: Aaron Finch (c), Ashton Agar, Alex Carey (vc), Pat Cummins (vc), Peter Handscomb, Josh Hazlewood, Marnus Labuschagne, Kane Richardson, D'Arcy Short, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Ashton Turner, David Warner, Adam Zampa

No Maxwell ?! But Handscomb gets a gig ? Crazy. Surely, we could fly over another keeper, if Carey goes down ?

Also Turner preferred ahead of Maxy.

Beats me. Rolling Eyes

'Maxwell, who has said he is open to a national recall following his break, denied he had a point to prove and suggested his T20 form counts for little when it comes to 50-over selection.

"This is T20 cricket. They're playing one-day cricket," said Maxwell. "I've got five men out (of the 30-yard circle) for 14 overs to try and work gaps.

"There's so many more opportunities to get off strike and I feel like I can get into my innings quite easily because there's so many gaps straight out of the Power Play ... I feel like I'm easing into my innings and then once I'm into my innings, then I go.

"One-day cricket is completely different. They will probably write that my World Cup wasn't good enough. I'll just trying to keep doing as well as I can for the Stars."'

Maxwell:

“I might not train like everyone else. I go in the nets and try and hit my first five or six balls for six because that’s the way I warm up. Some people don’t like that, that’s not the way everyone goes about it.”

(The Age)

[I wonder if Maxwell was thinking of Smith, who as captain threw him under the bus.]

Geoff Lawson is not a fan of the selectors:

"Australia were well beaten in the World Cup semi-final in July by England. The selections lacked imagination and were dripping in conservatism, and Australia could not match the new world order of England and New Zealand.

The three games against India will be played on pitches that more often than not favour the spinners and only thanks to Sean Abbott’s injury does D’Arcy Short get a run when he should have been one of the first picked and the second picked for the World Cup. Adam Zampa will be a key player and the out-of-form but often-favoured Ashton Agar may find himself warming the pine if assistant coach Andrew McDonald has his way.

There is a deficit of power players, such as Marcus Stoinis and Glen Maxwell, once more a nod to conservatism. Both are all-rounders who seem to be out of favour due to non-cricket reasons.

Hopefully George Bailey will take up his selection position sooner rather than later.
...

There are two more ODI series after India and before the winter settles in: Australian play No.3-ranked New Zealand in mid-March and No.5-ranked South Africa in late February and early March. When the dust has settled on those series, the progress on the "new" 50-over team can be more carefully assessed."

(SMH)

[Stoinis and Maxwell, it has to be repeated, had an awful time in the WC.]

cricinfo reports: "Kane Richardson is marking his run up along with Starc, so looks like Australia will leave out one of Cummins and Hazlewood."
