Trent Boult was quoted earlier: "It's about keeping it simple. Build dots on these guys. It was very damp this morning. It's definitely harder but it's on the slower side."

Santner beats Smith with turn and bounce, and Oz get a bye.

But Santner has not been bowling well.

Strong crowd today. The second time it's surpassed 80,000 in a non-Ashes Boxing Day test.

80,473.

^ On financial grounds (the only thing CA understands), they should give NZ more Boxing Day Tests.

It seems 2000+ came in just for the final session.

.................................

Oz 4/257 (90). Stumps.

The second new ball swung less than the first. (The first 10 overs, the ball swung 2.1 degrees. A few overs into the second new ball, it was only 1.4 degrees.)

The pitch gets a pass, but it's probably too slow. (Smith nicked Southee late in the day, but it fell well short of slip. Ponting noted the ball was dying at Southee's end. I reckon that's disturbing on day 1.) They were probably lucky that the conditions early helped with the swing, which made the pitch seem more sporting than it is.

"Swepson has claimed 12 wickets at 26.58 for Queensland so far this season, including a match-winning haul of 7 for 92 including a hat-trick against Victoria at the MCG. He looms as the most likely spin bowling partner for Nathan Lyon on turning surfaces in Bangladesh in June, though the allround abilities of Ashton Agar saw him play alongside Lyon and Steve O'Keefe in Bangladesh in 2017.

Tellingly, Swepson has dramatically cut his economy rate this summer, conceding just 2.36 runs an over when he had never before been taken for fewer than 3.78 runs per over in a Shield season. Australia's tactics for Test matches under the coaching of Justin Langer have focused on a stifling pressure on opposing batsmen, particularly overseas."

(Brettig, cricinfo)

[The 7/92 is good but means he's only taken 5 wickets in the rest of the Shield season!]

Mark Taylor says Oz's biggest problem is... in the spin department. Shocked Need a good leggie, he says. Swepson? [O'Keeffe said the Sheffield Shield needs to support spin bowlers better with wearing pitches. He's probably right that slogathon pitches are not best for 'young' spinners' development.]
...

Taylor:

"The spin bowling department concerns me. This is no criticism of Nathan Lyon, whose record speaks for itself, but more a reflection of what is coming through beneath him.

We need a wrist-spinner to emerge. Australian cricket has generally been dominant when we've been able to complement strong batting and fast bowling with a leggie of note.
...

But who is out there? Steve O'Keefe won a Test for Australia in India but he's 35 and coming to the end. Jon Holland is injured.

Adam Zampa is so focused on playing limited-overs cricket he has not developed as a red-ball bowler. He can change his pace and be effective with the white ball but he will not spin sides out in turning conditions.

Ashton Agar does not strike me either to be the Test spinner Australia need. With three wickets at 136 in the Sheffield Shield this season, his numbers are poor.

Queensland leggie Mitchell Swepson looks to be the next one in line. He turns it a bit but it concerns me he has taken only one five-wicket haul in 39 first-class matches.

Perhaps Labuschagne can keep working on his craft and be the bowler who can help out Lyon with threes and fours occasionally."

Smith should be fined for blowing up at umpire Nigel Llong.

"Smith's exchange with Llong leaves him open to be slapped with a second charge of dissent in as many months.

Under the ICC's code of conduct, players can be charged for "excessive, obvious disappointment with an umpire's decision" or "arguing or entering into a prolonged discussion with the umpire about his/her decision"."

I cannot see how that could not be dissent. Yet people still want this guy to be captain again. Sad He's unfit for captaincy.

Maaaaaaaaaaaaate. Are you not a cricket lover ? You so often give excessive import to the minutiae of the game.

Who cares if Smith remonstrated with the umpy ? Really ?

As soon as the selectors tire of TP's under achievement as a #7 bat, Carey will replace him and Smith will come back, as skipper, immediately.

Excellent opening day of the BD Test.

A classic 'send them in and take a wicket in the first over' start for the Caps.

Then, the Aussies took back the initiative with Warner, Labu and Smith batting well, supported by Wade (32) and Head (25*) in the last session.

The early perceived life in the track will make way for better batting conditions, tomorrow.

I see a declaration, some time after tea. Of course, that's if they're not bowled out. Smile

That's not minutiae. Ever since the introduction of match referees, possibly before, certain standards of conduct have been expected from the players. Smith's dummy spit went on for a long time, and it was over disputed leg-byes vs. dead balls! So insignificant! Not even over a wicket, which is still covered by codes of conduct.

And, again, it is exactly cricket lovers who will not sweep things under the carpet. The imputation that lovers should gloss over wrongdoing is utterly false. It's the casual followers, like the T20 crowd, who won't give a stuff about anything, including whether the game even survives.

And, again, the cricket media are not glossing over it. e.g. I didn't force Fairfax to write an article on it with video. I really doubt cricket journos and commentators are "not cricket lovers".

When Jason Roy had a dummy spit over being given out in the WC SF, we rightly condemned his actions very strongly on this forum. We said he should be fined and suspended -- if not hung, drawn and quartered in the village square! I don't know how we can with straight faces turn around and say it's minutiae when an Oz player has a dummy spit. A certain Nickster with English attachments occasionally drops by this forum and has hinted (or possibly openly accused) that we are so biased. I wonder why!

The sad thing about Smith is he now has a long record of dubious conduct. We were just reminded of one episode the other day in the WIndies v. India ODI, when the WIndies successfully argued the umpire into calling for a TV review on a run out, after word from their dressing room that it was out. (The umpire had already given it not out, without going to TV.) This was compared with Smith's actions a few years ago, when he illegally sought info from the dressing room on whether to review.

The captain is in. Good luck, Tim! We need you!

The short ball got Smith again. Wagner is happy. Good fingertip catch overhead by Nicholls.

The scoring rate since the wicket of Smith has tripled.

And now Head reaches 50. He needs to go on with it, for his own sake.
Head has 5 boundaries. One of them was cut in the air through Santner,
who was just beaten with power and did not get a hand on it.
