Evangelical church (quite rightly) supports impeachment

They'd have teams dedicated to linking Trump to climate change

It's always been unsavoury to see Christians adoring Trump, contrary to their own professed values and beliefs. Religious hypocrisy is nothing new, but Trump idolatry takes it to new heights.

I know many devout Christians who shudder at the fact that Trump is such a slime bag and con man. They have my sympathy, but it's well beyond time for the church to speak out.

Nothing quite as cringey as atheist left progressives cheering on a group of Evangelical Christians.

Love the damning reverse logic here:

Franklin Graham wrote:
I know a number of Republicans in Congress, and many of them are strong Christians. If the President were guilty of what the Democrats claimed, these Republicans would have joined with the Democrats to impeach him.

It’s almost as if partisanship completely trumps commitment to rule of law or religious values.

It's true on both sides, apart from a couple of Dems who are in deep red states or areas the rest fell into line. This was despite reports of many of them being against the impeachment.

You'll see the same in the Senate. Some Dems like Sinema will vote Not Guilty because she's in Arizona.

^To clarify, Wokko, are you ascribing atheism to me and implying that I oppose Christianity or even evangelical Christianity?

Not making personal judgements on Nick's posters, just referring to the "journalists" at The Guardian and the various social media whackos that suddenly decided that the opinions of an evangelical Christian magazine were relevant.

I mean, it kind of is, in the sense that it indicates dissension in one of Trump’s core support demographics. But the news story is kind of opportunistic and of far less significance than they would like us to think, because we know that his voting bloc remains strongly behind him.

From what I've seen that magazine doesn't represent that demographic, more a liberal church offshoot - hence the founder of the magazine's son denouncing them.

Okay, cool. I don't have a problem with religion and never have. My beef is with authoritarianism and fundamentalism, which of course can be religious or otherwise.

But we also need to talk about flagrant hypocrisy. Not run-of-the-mill hypocrisy, which involves people failing to meet ideals, but the ongoing unapologetic contradiction of one's own clearly telegraphed explicit views.

As David mentions, this is newsworthy in the sense that it's a break from the overwhelming uncritical support of Trump by evangelicals. But it's far more important in institutional Christian circles in the US than David seems to think.

This is the most tedious thing I've ever read. How are people enthralled by this?

Paywall, but yeah, I don't really care.

There are no high crimes and misdemeanors. He'll be acquitted. Maybe 2 Republicans who hate him will vote guilty (Romney being one) and a few Dems in Red States (like Sinema) will vote not guilty.

Will otherwise be a party line vote.
