The real hurt for Trump will come if we can get a look at his tax and financial records.

Anyone with nothing to hide wouldn't be taking the measures he is.

They got a hold of his tax returns once already. As with everything else it was a big nothing burger.

No the media got hold of some tax forms from one single year (2005) and it really wouldn't surprise if it wasn't strategically leaked by Trump himself.

That isn't going to cut it, not by a long way and isn't remotely the equivalent of a group of forensic accountants examining his business dealings across decades.

This shouldn't be even up for debate with anyone running for the President of the United States required to be an open book on such matters if successful.

Why? There's no legal requirement of any kind. He was a private citizen and the IRS are full on about collecting their dues. I really don't understand the fascination with his tax returns.

I'd be more interested in politicians who've managed to enrich themselves while in office.

Why the reflexive leap to Trump's defence? In everyday life you wouldn't trust the creep to feed your pet cat, and you certainly would never lend him money or buy anything off him. You likely wouldn't ask him about anything beyond real estate, reality TV and legal dirty tricks, and you wouldn't entrust anything to his family members.

Even worse than his corruption, shonkiness and psychiatric problems, he gives the nuttiest Republicans cover for winding back advancement on everything from health care and abortion rights to environmental protections. You wouldn't support his tariffs in your own economy, and you wouldn't support anyone else suppressing in effect your own wealth by destabilising the global economy. You wouldn't want your own PM interfering in markets and private corporate affairs, and you certainly wouldn't tolerate Australian politicians encouraging, say, Indonesia to interfere in elections.

Just what about all this do you find so worthy of passionate defence? The only thing I can come up with is pure tribalism, or perhaps the misapprehension that his populism means even little old you can influence him.

Of course, some of us haven't forgotten that pretty much the same constituency defended George W. right up to the great unraveling. So, the obvious answer here is that poor judgement is not a trait easily remedied.

The problem with your argument is that you think we idolise Obama the way that you and your fellow alt-righters idolise Trump. We really don't. Any intelligent leftist (or any vaguely critical analyst of US politics of any political stripe) is able to point to serious failings of the Obama presidency. You might get more uncritical fawning from liberal centrists, but that's not who you're arguing with here.

The question is, why is Trump, of all people, your daddy?

Trumps politics aren't all that closely aligned to mine, but I think I can dissect where the love comes from as far as the right are concerned. First I'll say it's kind of beneath you to throw around the alt-right smear, it's just a dog whistle. If you really feel the need to call someone a Nazi then own it.

Trump bullies the bully. People on the right of politics from the moderate Conservative, to the Libertarian to the Neo Con to the Nationalists have spent years hiding their opinions while the left loudly proclaim theirs all over the place. Tired of condescension, brow beating, yelling, doxing and outright violence the Right retreated. Apart from the odd brave soul like Andrew Bolt (assaulted for his views, sent constant death threats) and the like the media went left, schools and university went hard left and politics did too (Turnbull was further to the left than Rudd and he was meant to be a Conservative).

Suddenly up pop this guy who calls the left out, he bullies these pricks right back and people loved it. He's a mediocre politician, is far more liberal than his supporters but the groups who have been smugly patronizing them for years are in a meltdown. Everything he says has the same people who would get you fired, shout at you in a restaurant track you down online and tell your friends and family you're a Nazi crying into their soy lattes.

The same phenomenon has given Brexit, Morrison and Boris. People like me who don't really like either side of mainstream politics keep saying to those on the left "Learn your lesson, stop being aggressive, tone down the socialist rhetoric and policy and cut that climate doomsday shit out and you'll find your way back"... and they call me a racist, climate denier, Nazi, bigot etc, etc.

So **** the left, long may demagogues like Trump get the masses on side and as you say "Own the libs".
